HP TouchPad Coming in June to WalMart, OfficeMax in July, and with 3G, 4G

There?s a lot of news, or rather leaks, on the webOS front with HP?s debut consumer tablet since the computer giant had acquired Palm. The company?s webOS TouchPad tablet is expected to launch in June at WalMart while office retailer OfficeMax will be selling the tablet in July, according to the latest leaked computer screenshots sent to Pre Central, and there will also be a 3G and 4G model available.

The leak shows that retailer WalMart is expected to carry the 32 GB TouchPad model for just under $600 at $598. According to the Pre Central tipster, the inventory computer system lacks the denotation ?bupukiss,? suggesting that the launch is happening sooner or later, perhaps in June.

At OfficeMax, the tablet is listed as coming on July 17th. What?s interesting is that the retailer is listing both 3G and 4G models. It?s unclear if that?s an error, or if the TouchPad will be launching in both variants. Another possibility is that AT&T?s 4G HSPA+ network can also be interpreted as a 3G network as it is an evolution of the 3G HSPA protocol, making things a bit murky.

Given the iPad 2?s continued dominance in the consumer tablet space and vast number of Android tablets already hitting the market, HP will have some work cut out for it if it wants to make the TouchPad a success.

Download: Evernote for Android Tablets Beta

More Honeycomb apps, you say? Why, of course! Evernote, who received honors of being Phandroid?s highest-ranked note taking application, has gotten a tablet version and is now in public beta. While the phone-specific application was still great on tablets, we always appreciate developers taking the time and effort to further refine the user experience and adapt their applications to tablets. There won?t be much different outside of the obvious user interface changes compared to the application on Android phones, but it?s always nice to have a native option. Click here to get started. Book Rest Lamp

by Edwin - on May 30th, 2011

You know that since you were young, you?ve always wanted to stand out from the rest. That?s not too hard to do if you were to act like a boor amongst your mates, but understated elegance ? now that is a hard act to follow. The Book Rest Lamp, however, might just elevate you to such levels if you aren?t quite there yet. The name itself might already give the game away, if not the picture, but how about letting your favorite tome sit right on top of the lamp?

Doing so will have it look like a house in one of those classic designs, letting you feel all nice, warm and fuzzy within. Of course, we do hope that the harsh light from the lamp won?t spoil your book?s pages in the long run if you happen to park the book there more than you read it, using the lamp for long hours each day. Available for 40 with a choice of UK, US or EU plugs, this is one modern design for your home that you would do well to seriously consider.

Samsung To Launch 4G Tablet This Year

According to Samsung?s president of their mobile division, JK Shin, the company plans to launch a 4G tablet later this year, although we don?t know if it will be a 4G version of one of Samsung?s new tablets that have already been announced, like the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or a completely new tablet.

He also mentioned that we can expect to see the new Samsung Galaxy S III in the first half of 2012, so probably some time around April in 2012 as that would be one year on from the launch of the new Galaxy S II which was introduced recently.

Samsung Tablets

Samsung are obviously hoping to build on their Galaxy range of smartphones and tablets, which have been a great success for the company to date, and we have already heard that the new Galaxy S II is becoming popular amongst Android fans.

Subtly Display Your Geek Cred with the Cadence 4-Bit Chrono Watch

Unlike the watches that display the time in a pattern of colored lights, the 4-Bit Chrono UTC Watch from the Cadence Watch Co. looks like a typical analog watch with date and chronograph functions. The geekery is subtle in this one: the hour markers are displayed in 4-bit code with the least significant bit to the outside of the watch, and the red hand marks the UTC time. The watch has a 42mm-diameter stainless steel case with a leather band. The quartz movement is made in Japan, and the watch is water -resistant to 5ATM. The watch will be released soon, but you can pre-order it for $195, which is a 40% savings.

Mysterious New Asus Tablet/Phone Finds A Name: PadFone

It was only last night we found the teaser pic for the mysterious new tablet/phone from Asus and I immediately dismissed the device as the Eee Pad MeMO but could I have been wrong? (Gasp)

Well, we didn?t have much to go on, just assumptions and speculation but now it appears we have a name. Thanks to PocketNow, who did some sleuthing around in the FCC archives, we now have a name to give the Asus hybrid phone/tablet. In the aptly named Padfone (not to be confused by the iPad or iPhone), Asus has brought together their most brilliant, creative minds and delivered this title no doubt bestowed by the tech gods. (Sigh)

Well, besides the name of the tablet/phone, the FCC filing also shed new light that the device will be compatible with a capacitive stylus, adding more fuel to the fire that this is indeed, a rebranded Eee Pad MeMO (with an even sillier name). We?ll give you more details once this Tablefone, er- Padfone is unveiled at Computex next week.

But what do you guys think of the name? Bad? Good? Its not like a name could really hurt sales, I mean, just look at the Asus Transformer. I?m curious to hear what you guys would have come up so leave your ideas down below.

Man Builds Airplane And Launches Maiden Flight In Backyard

After nine years of top secret toil, Dan Reeves pulled out his homemade airplane from its lair for a test flight. The problem: he had to modify his house so it could be pulled out and readied. Keeping faithful to a straightforward turbo-prop design, Dan dug out a ramp form his basement for the fateful maiden voyage on his airborne ride. If there are more people like Dan (and we know there are), then the idea of a solitary Tony Stark building power armor in a cave isn?t so far fetched after all.

Dan Reeves Plane

The low quality pic above was captured from a video segue of Dan doing the deed. That is, pulling his precious baby out of the basement.

This should go out to the aspiring flyers out there: Yes you can. It might take almost a decade, but Dan?s got his own plane at last.

We wonder if it?s possible to build a fighter jet in your backyard. Or some spacious basement. Not a real fancy machine, but a simple design along the liens of the Sabre. Hmmm.

Go check the source link for the video.

ITP Thesis shows that the touchscreen is not enough

by Mark R - on May 27th, 2011

The touchscreen has revolutionized the last decade, and it will continue to improve this decade. However, this ITP thesis by Michael Kneupfel for NYU?s design program has shown that the touchscreen could use a little more accessories.

There is a video after the jump so you can see what he has in mind. The one in the picture is for pulses, and I am not certain what to use that for. However, there are a few things that are pretty much self-explanatory.

For example, there are two types of pens, and one of them allows for some intriguing shapes like a traditional thick marker pen. The other is used for making some interesting shapes.

The most intriguing of them is this weird toy robot that moves its arm as the user brings his or her finger closer to it. It is the one at the end of the video, and I can?t help but wonder if some toy company is planning some new line of action figures because of it.

Whatever the case, I think it shows that having a touchscreen is only the beginning. That iDevice may think that it is all that, but after all this, it seems very incomplete.

Motorola Droid X ?Soak? Test Starts Tonight, Gingerbread Coming to Limited Users

It turns out the announcement that the Gingerbread update for the Motorola Droid X won?t begin rolling out to all users today, after all. Word has come in that tonight the ?soak test? we caught wind of earlier in the week will begin rolling out to select members of the Motorola support forums. Chances are that the soak will be the initial wave of the update, and if all things go well all users will start to see the update following shortly.

The update won?t be pushed until late tonight, so many may not find it on their phones until morning. Rooted users will have to go back to your standard signed Droid X software.

EmSeeQ Emergency Locator Helps Recover Wandering and Lost Loved Ones Before it?s Too Late

by Janet Cloninger on May 26, 20110 comments

in News,Spotlight Gadgets

Amber Alerts notify us when a child has been lost or taken and is in danger. Missing children aren?t the only vulnerable people in need of immediate recovery, though. Elderly people, those with mental illness, Alzheimer patients, and others with cognitive impairment may also go missing and will need assistance returning home where they can get the care they need. A few states have created a Silver Alert system to notify the public of missing and endangered adults, but that system still only alerts citizens to be on the lookout for the missing person.

EmFinders gives you a way to quickly locate and rescue your missing loved one before bad things can happen. Your loved one will wear an EmSeeQ bracelet that looks like a standard watch. There?s also a more secure version that requires two hands for removal. The bracelets work with the 911 Emergency System, and EmFinders can trigger the bracelet to call your local 911 service so the location of the missing person can be triangulated. The 911 dispatcher can continue to update the location information until the person has been rescued. Monthly service plans or purchase/yearly plans are available, starting at $39.95 a month. You can also check for coverage in your area before committing to the service.
