Ila Wedge Personal Safety Door Alarm

by Edwin - on March 31st, 2012

A door wedge always comes in handy, as it prevents your door from slamming after being nudged by a particularly strong draft at that point in time. Not only does it help you avoid unwanted shocks and frights (your cat and dog will appreciate it as well), it will also prevent ruining said door at home. Of course, there is also the risk of having your fingers or toes getting hurt in the process when you are less than careful, and with the 14.99 Ila Wedge Personal Safety Door Alarm, it not only avoid all of those nasty occasions, it will also double up as an alarm ? pretty handy if you happen to live in a foreign country.

Should there be an unwanted intruder who tries to force entry, you and the hotel staff will be alerted by an ear-splitting alarm. This device will not add that much weight to your luggage, and there is no fear of accidentally triggering the device courtesy of an On/Off switch. It will run on a quartet of LR43 alkaline button cell batteries and dishes out a banshee rivaling 130dB volume level.

Are you going to turn off all your lights during Earth Hour this weekend? Will you do your part in helping keep our earth green? If so, then you might want to check out different methods of cutting down on your energy expenditure, and that might even include an overhaul of the existing consumer electronic items in your living room. Sceptre is one brand name that has long been associated with budget friendly TV sets that offer a careful balance of technology and performance without breaking the bank, and they are at it yet again with the 40 Series LCD HDTV.

Touted by Sceptre to be the ?ultimate eco-friendly TV? for those who are on the lookout for outstanding image quality, long term energy savings and environmental friendliness. With the latest 40 Series LCD HDTV, it will deliver 38.5? of viewing goodness in the form of the X409BV-FHD, where the manufacturing process followed strict guidelines that are specially aimed at maximizing materials while decreasing environmental waste. Apart from that, it also boasts of an extremely energy efficient design that is compliant with Energy Star 5.3, which ends up in significant reductions in energy consumption with an estimated yearly energy cost of only $14. I am not quite sure of the $14 figure ? just how many minutes of TV do you watch on it each day then?

All right, so we have established the claimed fact that the 40 Series LCD HDTV from Sceptre will be green in nature. But apart from that, what else does it bring to the table? For starters, there is Auto Dynamic Contrast Enhancement which reveals low-light details even in dim locations, a fair number of HDMI ports to hook up to the latest entertainment devices, an LCD backlight life that has been rated at over 50,000 hours, among others. If you are interested in picking up one of these puppies, I am pleased to say that the asking price of just $399.99 goes to show Sceptre?s commitment in keeping prices low for the current cash strapped generation.

Sand Flea robot jumps like its namesake

by Edwin - on March 30th, 2012

One of the fantastic facts that you would have come across while growing up would be this ? a flea is capable of jumping up many times its own height, and is the Olympic champion in the animal world when it comes to high jump events. And if one were to take a closer look at the technological achievements that humanity have gone through over the years, many of them were inspired by nature and the study of it. Flight, for example, is the dream of man taking to the skies like our feathered friends, although I am quite sure the Wright brothers were not angry when they first achieved the feat.

Robots have certainly come a long way since their inception, although there is still a whole lot of work to be done when it comes to making sure such robots will be able to function alongside humans just like they do in science fiction movies. With the Sand Flea robot, that has certainly taken a right step forward, where it is capable of clearing obstacles simply be jumping over it. Let us take a closer look at the Sand Flea robot right after the jump.

Boston Dynamics is the company behind the Sand Flea robot, where it will feature an updated jumping mechanism after taking over the efforts of Sandia National Laboratories? Precision Urban Hopper Robot. The Sand Flea is able to come to a complete stop and rear itself up prior to launch, as the CO2-powered piston will fire from the rear. Apart from that, the robot also boasts of a gyroscopic stabilization system which will be able to deliver a more controlled landing while keeping it oriented in flight, so that it can also fulfill its other purpose of capturing and relaying usable video while it is in midair.

The Sand Flea is fully capable of clearing heights of up to 30 feet (9 meters), and can also jump up to 25 times before it requires a trip to the refueling station. Needless to say, the military definitely has an interest in the Sand Flea robot, hence funding its development via DARPA, the Joint IED Defeat Organization (JIEDDO) and the Rapid Equipping Force. The whole idea of the Sand Flea is to provide generals with increased situational awareness in combat situations. Perhaps search and rescue operations would also come under its purview in more peaceful times.

Take photos with your fingers thanks to the Ubi-Camera

by Edwin - on March 29th, 2012

You remember when you were a little kid, and there was no such thing as digital cameras back then? Most of the time, when our parents wanted to snap photos of their exuberant and energy filled children running around, a stern shout is required to make sure we all stop in our tracks, tuck in our shirts, straighten out ourselves and pose in front of the camera. Dad would then use his hands to ?frame? a particular shot, by making an L-shape with his thumb and pointing finger on both hands, merging them into a rectangle, followed by clicking on the shutter button.

Who would have thought that such a physical act would finally end up in the 21st century as a gesture that might just kick start the way we shoot photos? These days, digital cameras are all the rage, and even smaller kids do have a DSLR that they can call their own. Well, the Ubi-Camera might just change or rather, revolutionize the way things are run ? allowing you to capture photos that have been composed simply by framing them using your hands. This is a prototype miniature camera that is being developed by a research group at the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences, which we will read about later after the jump.

According to the folks behind the Ubi-Camera, ?When you draw a picture or take a photo, you sometimes form a rectangle with your hands to decide the composition. With this camera, you can take a photo using the exact same motion. You attach this device to your index finger, and form a rectangle with your finger like this. You take the photo by using the rectangle as the viewfinder, like this. When you push hard with your thumb, the shutter is pressed.?

The camera itself comes with a range sensor, while the framing is determined by the distance between the camera and the photographer?s face. Using the current system that is still in development, the lens will feature a fixed focal length, while all zooming is done digitally on a PC. This particular method of photography renders viewfinders and displays as unnecessary. Basically, even using a miniature camera, you are able to snap photos intuitively while peering over the actual scene.

Windows Phone 7 on Your Android Phone

I am not exactly sure why I have been playing around with my phones so much lately, but it is fun todrasticallychange your phone?s appearance from time to time. Last night, I shared how you can make your Galaxy Tab 10.1 look like a Windows 8 Tablet and a while back I shared a neat Dreamboard theme that allows an iPhone to emulate the look and feel of Windows Phone 7. Tonight, I am sharing a way to get your Android phone to look like Windows Phone 7. So far, this has been the best Windows Phone theme I have tried on any platform. It?s actually a launcher and replaces your stock launcher, in my case it replaces Nova Launcher.

This launcher is called Launcher7. It?s free at the Google Play Store, but you can opt to buy the $1.99 version to eliminate ads. I don?t find the ads too intrusive as they only seem to be on the app launcher screen. As far as I can tell, it works on most versions of Android and I am using it on the Galaxy Nexus running ICS 4.03 with a custom ROM. You can run it without a custom ROM too.

Check out this video I recorded showing it in action:

Here are the files I used to pull off what I have set up so far:

  • WP7Lock Lite- The Windows Phone lock screen.
  • Launcher7- The main component. This is the replacement launcher that pulls this all off.
  • WP Contact - The contact list I showed.
  • WP Calculator ? I didn?t use this one.
  • Listview Theme ? I didn?t use this one.
  • Photo Safari - I didn?t use this one. Turns your photo gallery into a Windows Phone gallery.
  • Zplayer - I didn?t use this one. Give your music player the Zune/WP7 look.

The left screen shot is a product of WP7Lock Lite, the screen shot in the center is the main screen of Launcher7, and the right hand shot is the app launcher portion of Launcher7.

For icons and tiles for you to customize even more, head here, a blog for Launcher7 icons.

I might actually use the GNex with this launcher for a while. It?s pretty smooth and I haven?t run into any major problems. I only use 1 page with the standard ICS launcher anyhow. I don?t use widgets at all. This will work just fine for me and might even turn a few heads.

Bump to Pay with Bump?s new iPhone App

Bump has introduced a new iPhone app, Bump Pay, which does exactly what you?d expect from the name.

Bump Pay lets users ?bump? their iPhones for an easy payments.

The new Bump Pay app uses your PayPal account for easy money transfers. After the you enter the valueand the phones bumped, your money will transfer from your PayPal account to your friend?s PayPal account, or vice versa.

Bump Pay isn?t the first app to do easy mobile payments. The PayPal iPhone app has the same feature powered by Bump. There?s also Venmo which doesn?t use Bump but aims to make paying friends from your phone easier.

Bump Pay

Unlike the PayPal app, Bump Pay only has one function: to transfer money. It?s a much easier app to use for that purpose. It?s easy to just bump your phone to a friend?s phone without having to dig through menus, and you can always be sure you?re sending to the right person.

Bump Pay is available as a separate app, and isn?t included in the core Bump app. This is the first app to come out of Bump Labs, which Bump is using to test smaller apps that don?t necessarily fit in the Bump app.

The last time Bump added features like song and calendar sharing to the Bump app, the teamremoved those features because not many people used them. That caused a few problems with those few users. Now the company is able to bring those little-used features to users in their own separate apps.

Amazon to Launch 3 New Kindle Fire Tablets in 2012, But No 10-Inch Slate

Rumors of new Kindle Fire tablet models from Amazon are surfacing yet again, and the Internet giant is speculated to launch several models this year as an update to the current debut 7-inch slate that launched late last year. Curiously, though Amazon has been rumored multiple times in the past to launch a 10-inch Android tablet, it is said that the company won?t be debuting the larger slate this year.

With the Kindle Fire refresh, Amazon will be debuting two seven-inch tablet versions at differing price points and will be adding a high-end 8.9-inch tablet. According to The Next Web, Amazon will be debuting a low-end Kindle Fire with the same 7-inch 1024 X 600 resolution that comes with today?s Kindle Fire slate, a mid-range 7-inch model with a higher resolution 1280 X 800 resolution display, and a high resolution 1080p 8.9-inch model with a resolution of 1920 X 1200. The increase in resolution?as we?ve seen recently on the new iPad refresh, will be beneficial to reading, viewing pictures, watching videos, and consuming content on the web.

The Kindle Fire that debuted late last year achieved great success for having the right amount of compromises while still delivering a technologically advanced hardware platform. It featured a relatively high resolution 1024 X 600 display for its time, dual-core processing power, and a very heavily customized version of the Android OS.

Unlike other Android tablets that must tap into Google?s digital content platform for apps, music, books, magazines, movies, and other downloads, Amazon has its own content store and ecosystem. This is beneficial in allowing Amazon to undercut competitors with a $200 pricing for the Kindle Fire, which the company is selling at a loss in hopes that consumers will purchase other content from Amazon to help it recoup losses.

Google is also rumored to be entering the tablet space with a 7-inch quad-core Tegra 3 model from Asus. The debut of a Google branded Nexus Tablet will help Google combat Amazon in the Android space and focus attention back to the Android experience, rather than the Amazon overlay which hides most traces of the underlying OS.

Nintendo Wii U Close to Current Gen Consoles, Says Darksiders 2 Dev

It looks like Nintendo are more than content to stay behind the technological curve with their ?next-gen? console as well, banking on the success of the console?s tablet controller to carry it through. Darksiders 2 developer Vigil has been putting the Wii U through its paces and while it?s certainly a lot more capable than its predecessor, it doesn?t seem to have stunned them with its graphical prowess.

?We got the game running on their hardware pretty quickly, and the controller?s been great to work with,? according to Darksiders 2director Marvin Donald. Now it?s just down to deciding what we really want to do to make it a unique experience on the Wii U; taking advantage of the extra screen and the touch capability and all that. So, we?ll have a few new features for sure, but I think visually, for the most part, it?ll be pretty much the same.?

AT&T Galaxy S II Android 4.0 Update Gets Closer to Rolling Out

Just a few short days ago, the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy S II Skyrocket leaked out, a build that we think is pretty close to, if not the final version of the software itself. Today, another Android 4.0 update for an AT&T Galaxy S II device has leaked out and this time it?s an even bigger one. Yes, the Galaxy S II Android 4.0 update has arrived and it appears that it too could be the real deal.

RootzWiki has leaked the software to the surface and it?s directly from Samsung.

While this is great for those that root their phones, it?s also fantastic for those that are waiting for the official roll out as that date has seemingly gotten closer with this find.

Those who own a rooted Galaxy S II on AT&T should have no problem following the instructions to get the software up and running and from the comments, it seems like it?s working like a charm.

AT&T Galaxy S II Android 4.0 Update Gets Closer to Rolling Out

For those that aren?t yet rooted or are hesitant to, you may just want to hold off on downloading this because like I said, this is generally a good sign as far as official roll out dates are concerned.

Remember, the Galaxy S II Android 4.0 update is already rolling out for some users and that means that it?s only a matter of time before carrier specific devices like the AT&T Galaxy S II get the official love from Samsung.

Before you install this leaked update, keep in mind, there is always the possibility that something could go wrong with your phone.

No one wants a bricked phone and we can?t be responsible if it happens to you so please, be careful if you do decide to take the plunge.

Rumor: Google Drive Coming This April

We all know Google Drive exists. It?s in the works, at the very least. But Giga OM has allegedly learned, from a close source, that it?s close to being finished. And, more than that, it?s close ? close enough to launch in the first week of April. We?re not sure what to make of the claim, but crazier things have happened.

The cloud storage service is said to be bringing users 1GB of free storage, with an option of expanding storage if you pay. Box.net, DropBox ? sort of like that. The difference with Google Drive, however, are the APIs Google?s planning on providing. They will allow other apps to store files in a user?s Google Drive account. Their report also states it will be available for Google Apps customers. No word on how the Android app might work could be given.

While the API support is interesting, it?s not clear if it would be enough to draw people away from their favorite services to which they?re already attached, especially if Google is offering no more than 1GB of storage for free. Of course, this figure could be wrong or it could always increase in the future.

Remember that Gmail?s storage per user has been increasing ever since its beta launch, but that is fundamentally different. We wouldn?t be surprised to see Google bump the free storage to at least 2GB like their competitor DropBox (before free incentives). We won?t know until it happens, though, so we?ll just have to wait a couple more weeks to see if this source isn?t bluffing.

Google Voice Integration Expanding to Non-Sprint Customers

Nearly a year ago, Sprint announced that it will offer seamless Google Voice integration, allowing customers to use their carrier-assigned phone number as their Google Voice number or allowing customers to replace their Sprint number with one from Google. The tie-in allows customers to manage one number and get transcribed voicemails and text messages from their carrier, which would either cost a premium or may not be offered. The downside is that picture messaging may not always work as Google Voice does not yet support that feature for all carriers. Now, Google is looking to expand its carrier integration to more carriers beyond Sprint.

Though Google did not expand on what carriers it was having discussions with, the company did say that they are in talks with other carriers. As the service is only available currently in the U.S., Google Voice?s expansion would be to a U.S.-based carrier.

Google Voice manager Vincent Paquet said in an interview to CNET, ?Sprint integration has worked really well. ?We have, since Day One, had a steady stream of people signing up for it.?

When the service was initially announced for Sprint, neither Google nor Sprint had stated that the service would be an exclusive or limited-time exclusive for the Now Network.

Google Voice is a service that provides users with one number to give out. Once a caller calls the user on the assigned or chosen Google Voice number, the Google Voice service will forward the call to any number of phones to allow users to choose where to pick up their calls. The service also provides SMS forwarding for text messages, but MMS forwarding is done with a limited number of carriers and images are usually sent or forwarded to email.

Animal Footprint Shoes: Seem Like Bears Are Roaming The Cities

One of the common outdoor activities typically done right after a snow drizzle especially for kids, is playing and forming invented imagery with snow.

However, for a Canadian artist like Maskull Lasserre, this season is for a lot more. The beauty of this scenery held him to expand his imagination and create an innovative thought. Hence, this idea has turned into a not-so-usual intended design for pairs of shoes.

Perhaps, this solo artist is an animal lover or a great fun enthusiast, and so he formed ordinary shoe soles into animal footprints. These foot wears are basically seem like regular shoes but with altered soles. This then create a different view when using them in snow or soft land. It?s like leaving realistic animal footprints on the ground.

Would you dare to see bear or even wolf traces among the streets in your area? I bet you wouldn?t!
