EE 4g

As the first operator to bring 4G to the UK it is important that we make it accessible to as much of the population as possible, as quickly as possible. To be ahead of schedule and covering approximately 45% of the population within just 90 days of the launch is a great achievement for our network team,? says EE CEO Olaf Swantee. ?We continue to bring superfast mobile to more and more people, whether they?re using their devices outdoors or in their homes and offices, and to increase the speed and consistency of our 4G and 3G network across the UK.?

It will be interesting to see how fast Ee can roll out to their 4G to the rest of the UK, other mobile carriers will also be launching 4G LTE in the UK later this year.

Light Your Space and Be Unique

by Alison - on January 30th, 2013

Vintage is in! Retro anything seems to attract attention. For some of us we flashback to our younger days. Others that are too young just think retro equals cool. More unique creations pop up on the market every day. Creative types seem to be looking at what many of us consider ?old and trash bound? and turn it into functional products, some even gadget-y. Wish I could say I was that creative!

If you are looking for a way to stand out and charge your gadgets take a look at BOSS Lamps. A creative Canadian electrician decided to put his knowledge to use in a fun way. After acquiring a variety of parts and pieces, scraps and salvage, a line of lamps with special flare have been created. BOSS Lamps offer a sort of industrial looking retro feel for a 40W bulb. The charging station versions include a socket and two USB ports to make it not only stylish, but functional. Available to ship in the US and Canada, BOSS Lamps run from $68 to $92 and are being sold directly on Etsy. So if a combo lamp/charging station makes sense for some table in your life, take a look at a more unique solution.

Pen Sized Scanner

by Edwin - on January 30th, 2013

You know, the scanner is one computer peripheral that you wish you had purchased when you didn?t need it, only to find yourself ringing up a mate late into the night, asking him whether he could open up the doors of his home so that you can drop by and perform that necessary scan. Older scanners of yore tend to be large, bulky and noisy ? not to mention slow, of course, but it is a good thing that modern day technology has ushered in the age of miniaturization, shrinking down what was once rather large scanners into a pocket-friendly form factor. Case in point, the $124.95 Pen Sized Scanner.

The Pen Sized Scanner works as its name suggests ? this is a ballpoint pen which allows you to leave your John Hancock on important documents, while also being able to laser-scan documents in a jiffy. The scanning bit is handled by a high-precision auto-focus lens, where it is accompanied by a 5-megapixel sensor that has been integrated into the pen itself, letting it scan letters, recipes, or important documents at 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution. Whenever you press the shutter button down halfway, a visible red laser will be projected to frame a document, as it focuses on the image automatically before snapping a photo. Sporting 1GB of internal memory, it is good for up to 1,000 scanned pictures in JPEG format and also being able to hold 1,000 1-minute voice memos in WAV format. A single hour?s charge offers up to 300 scans if you?re interested.

Review: Nillkin case for the HTC Droid DNA [VIDEO]

As you guys well know by now, I cycle between Android devices like I do my underoos (every few weeks). Since I?m often selling a previous device for the next greatest model, I like to ensure my devices stay in tip-top shape and near mint condition. There?s no better way to guarantee that than by outfitting a phone with a snazzy, stylish case.

A few weeks ago, my journey led me to some extremely affordable cases from a brand called Poetic and if you remember that post, things didn?t turn out so well for my HTC Droid DNA. No matter, I continued searching for a case and found a brand called Nillkin who offers a wide variety of cases for a few Android devices, my DNA being one of them.

When it comes to the DNA, I?m actually one of the few who loathes the red accents along the side (or anywhere for that matter), so finding a case to cover everything up was just as much about asthetics, as it was about protection. Thankfully, the Nillkin case covers up the sides of the device rather nicely, while providing a nice, textured soft-touch feel.

The only part that really bothers me about the case is the gap left open for the volume rocker. On most cases the edges go up all the way along the sides of the device. With Nillkin?s model, it?s cutout leaving a big gaping hole and is not only an eyesore, but feels a little weird in the hand. But hey, accessing the volume rocker has never been easier.

Still, it?s this one shortcoming that will lead me on another search for an inexpensive, but premium quality case for my DNA. In the meantime, the Nillkin case will suffice. If you don?t think the volume cutout will bother you as much as it did me, you can nab a Nillkin case for the HTC Droid DNA via the eBay link below.

Who Is At the Door? Check Your Phone.

by Alison - on January 29th, 2013

Crowdfunding has to be one of the biggest buzz words of the last year. Kickstarter and Indiegogo really put a different spin on how to create a product. Unfortunately, many good products don?t achieve funding goals. A new type of crowdfunding site began to emerge to help move these unfunded projects along, give inventors more infrastructure and feedback while also protecting buyers. Christie Street does just that and took on a product that is now funded and slated to launch this summer.

DoorBot looks to be a next generation example of how our phones continue to integrate into and control parts of our lives. DoorBot is a wireless video doorbell that links through your home network to your phone or tablet. Included on the device are a video camera and doorbell. Rather than ringing in the house, DoorBot will ring the app on your device when activated. Whether at home or away, you will immediately see who is ringing. And similar to when a call comes in, you have the chance to speak to them or ignore them. In addition to not missing instructions for delivery people or friends dropping by, DoorBot provides a perfect deterrent for warding off unwanted solicitors. And it can even help you give an illusion that you are home to not encourage thieves.

A few months ago we wrote about Lockitron, which enables you to lock and unlock your door remotely. Combined with DoorBot you can remotely see who is at the door and choose to let them in (or not!). Shipping in July, DoorBot on its own runs $189, Lockitron $179, or sign on for the DoorBot/Lockitron combo offered on Christie Street for $339 ? and enter the world of remotely controlling access to your home or business.

GammaTech Durabook TA10 Tablet

by Edwin - on January 29th, 2013

Do you think that you are a clumsy person, and tend to avoid purchasing the higher end mobile consumer electronics devices simply because you know that you are an accident waiting to happen, and woe to you when you break the 10th display on your smartphone because you stumbled and let the handset slip, sending it tumbling onto the concrete floor with a heart wrenching crunch. Well, this has made you far more wary on how you spend your money, and you avoid tablets like the plague. What if I told you that there is salvation on the horizon? This is where the GammaTech Durabook TA10 tablet comes in, where it is touted to be the latest rugged tablet which was specially designed and engineered for demanding applications such as those found in the utility industry.

The GammaTech Durabook TA10 will occupy the high-end side of things where tablets are concerned, and it boasts of a 10.4? display with a high performance CPU, carry an ultra-high brightness LCD display, and runs on an Intel Ivy Bridge processor.

Jen Chen, GammaTech president, said, ?We are delighted to be able to introduce our new Durabook TA10 rugged tablet at DistribuTECH, the utility industry?s leading smart-grid conference and exposition. This new tablet makes perfect sense for utility workers out in the field with its ultra-high screen brightness for easy viewing. Its ruggedness and durability stand up to virtually any harsh environment. Its mobility factor is enhanced with Bluetooth and Intel WiFi wireless connectivity as well as an optional internal GPS function.?

Expect the 10.4? XGA TFT LCD display with LED backlight to work well under any lighting conditions, where the resistive multi-touch panel with tempered glass will be ideal for the viewing of drawings, files, and web pages. A couple of six-cell battery packs offer longer battery life on the move, and just to make sure you have an easy time with in-the-field identification and tracking purposes, the Durabook TA10 will feature an optional UHF RFID reader and Barcode scanner. Other optional accessories include a handle, hand strap, and docking station.

I wonder how the executives over at Panasonic are feeling with their Toughbook receiving some, well, tough competition with the $2,300 GammaTech Durabook TA10 rugged tablet.

Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 portable hard drive

by Edwin - on January 29th, 2013

Having a portable hard drive these days is nothing new, and if you were to carry one around with you, it would most probably come in a rather large capacity. Well, there are a fair number of companies out there that do churn out their share of portable hard drives, with Western Digital being one of them, but today we will concentrate on what Toshiba has in store. The Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 range has just been expanded, where the highest end model is now capable of toting around up to 2TB of your favorite digital memories as well as any other files. Apart from that, Toshiba also has something a little bit extra special for the masses, which is a 2TB Canvio Special Edition portable hard drive.

It is said that the new 2TB solution will enable Toshiba?s customers who want basic functionality without having to sacrifice on storage capacity, and it must be said that majority of the basic users are ?hard at work? whether they realize it or not, in growing an expansive digital library.

The most basic storage solution from Toshiba is the aptly named Canvio Basics 3.0, where as mentioned earlier, it now comes in a 2TB capacity. Just in case you need to get a rough idea on how much data does 2TB equal to, we are looking at roughly 571,000 digital photos, 526,000 digital music files or 1,640 downloaded digital movies. Best of all is, you need not have to go through the hassle of performing a software installation as the Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 follows the usual plug-and-play maneuver.

As its name suggests, the Canvio Basics 3.0 will offer support for USB 3.0 to deliver rapid transfer speeds, and will also play nice with USB 2.0 devices, where it will come equipped with a special internal shock sensor and ramp loading technology so that you can shrug off accidental drops.

As for the Canvio Special Edition Portable Hard Drive, it offers spacious storage capacity and a complete, indeed simple-to-use backup solution. Sporting NTI Backup Now EZ software that makes backing up systems a cinch, users can now choose to store their digital files to the cloud, or back up their files and folders to their Canvio portable hard drive.

The 2TB Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 portable hard drive will retail for $189.99 a pop, while the 2TB Toshiba Canvio Special Edition portable hard drive is a wee bit more expensive at $219.99.

Feel that Touch Screen Keyboard!

by Alison - on January 28th, 2013

Raise your hand if you went from Blackberry to iPhone or Android devices. The only regret I found after the switch was the lack of tactile keys on the keyboard. You probably knew ? or were ? a finger keyboarder that could put full keyboarders to shame. Ever see someone type while looking up. Yep. RIM really taught us all the art of tactile mini-keyboard typing. By now typing on the screen we tend to lose that speed. I?m guessing that spell check is the smartphone manufacturer?s way to combat the lack of tactility.

What would it take to make our Galaxys, iPhones, Kindles and the like have this one missing feature? A smart company called Tactus Technology, that?s what. Tactus invented a technology that will take the place of a manufacturers top display layer, things we commonly call the lens/window/cover glass. When the device calls for a keyboard the Tactus Tactile Layer? Technology injects a proprietary fluid into said top layer enabling raised surfaces to appear over the keys on the display. Using this technology will not interfere with other touch functions on the screen and uses minimal power. Buttons do have some resistance ? just enough to prevent the accidental touch from typing a character. Tactus is creating the technology for a variety of screen sizes and types. So expect to see it in phones, tablets and phablets. At this time, OEM is their strategy, rather than producing consumer overlays. No plans have been announced on where you may see Tactus Tactile Layer Technology in a device. But it seems imminent.

Octa TabletTail Vacuum Dock and WhaleTail Kit for tablets and eReaders review

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-1

When I first saw the Octa stand last year, I thought it was cute and whimsical. Many gadget accessories are very serious and seem to be designed to fit into the most sedate business environment. When designers do decide to mix it up, it?s often just to offer a brighter color in the same overall design. The folks at Octa aren?t afraid of cute, and they came up with a whale of a cute tablet stand. The Octa TabletTail: WhaleTail works like a champ while being as cute as it can be. The whale tail design doesn?t mean that you won?t also be able to use it in a work environment, though.

Click any image to view an enlarged size.

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-2The heart of the system is this rounded Vacuum Dock. You pump the large silver button on the side to pull a vacuum so the Dock adheres to any non-porous surface, such as the back of most tablets and eBook readers. It should work with most skins and some covers, too. Octa says to use five pumps for a secure attachment. They also recommend giving it a couple of pumps periodically as you use the Dock on your tablet or other device to maintain a tight seal.

The Dock measures about 2? tall X about 3.5? wide at the base or 4? wide when you include the vacuum pump button. Fully extended, the WhaleTail is about 3.75? tall. The entire assembly will weigh about 6.4 ounces in your gear bag.

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-3The round disk with the spiral design removes to expose the attachment point for the WhaleTail.

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-4This suction cup on the bottom of the Dock has a spiral design of circular indentions. Octa says the Dock has a ?dual-chamber vacuum suction system? that creates an ?unbelievably secure connection.? The two little tabs, seen at 12 and 6 o?clock, are lifted to break the vacuum seal when you want to remove the Dock.

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-5

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-6This little tail is the stand for the Dock. The fluke is branded with the Octa name. The circular base holds the attachment point for connecting the WhaleTail to the Dock. You?ll notice a dot on the top of the circular base (see upper picture) that you line up with a dot on the Dock as you attach it.

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-7Here?s the connector. After you seat the circular base into the Dock, twist to lock the stand into place.

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-8Here?s the assembled stand, ready to be attached to my iPad.

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-10I laid the assembled stand on the back of my iPad and gave it five pumps to create a seal. You can see that the pump button remained retracted once I got a good seal. The connection is strong enough that I can dangle the iPad from the stand. The rounded Dock fits nicely in the palm of my hand. You can use the Octa WhaleTail as a hand grip for the tablet. You can even bend the tail snugly against your hand for a little extra security.

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-11You can attach the WhaleTail and Dock to a variety of locations on the back of the tablet. You can support the tablet vertically?

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-12or horizontally. You can adjust the tail to adjust the angle.

Just a note: I tried attaching the dock to my iPad mini in its KHOMO Super Slim case. The permanently-attached front smart cover gets in the way of using the WhaleTail with the iPad mini, but the Dock very securely attached to the back of the KHOMO cover. It would work great with a snap-on back cover ? but I?d want to be sure the back cover held tightly to the iPad or iPad mini before I dangled it from my hand.

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-14This image from the Octa site shows some of the ways you can support your tablet. You?ll notice the final image shows the Dock being used without the tail. It can roll if you touch the tablet?s upper corners, but the rounded Dock alone can be used as a typing stand for the on-screen keyboard. I found the Octa WhaleTail kit makes a sturdy stand for supporting my iPad on a table, sofa, or mattress. One picture at Octa even shows a man balancing a tablet on his knee using the TabletTail kit.

octa-vacuum-dock-and-whale-tail-13The Octa kit comes with two little booklets that explain how and where you should attach the Dock to the tablet and the WhaleTail to the Dock. It also comes with a drawstring bag to store your Octa TabletTail kit when you aren?t using it. The bag can also be used to clean your tablet screen.

The Vacuum Dock is supposed to be compatible with other tails, but Octa?s site doesn?t offer any other tails. They are currently seeking funding at Kickstarter for a MonkeyTail kit with the Vacuum Dock, but the Kickstart campaign isn?t showing that you can pledge for just the tail attachment for those of us who already have the Vacuum Dock.

I loved the looks of the Octa TabletTail stand when I first saw it early last year, and I still think it?s a cute and fun accessory. After using it, I realize it?s also a very useful accessory. It holds my iPad (or any other tablet) in just about any position I can think of. You can attach it most anywhere on the flat portion of the back of a tablet. Of course, a small tablet, like my iPad mini, has less real estate to serve as attachment points, so you may have fewer stand options with a small tablet. You?ll find it?s a very useful stand for your tablet or eBook reader, regardless of the device?s size. Although it?s not as small and doesn?t fold up as compactly as some tablet stands, the extra versatility more than compensates for the slightly bigger package you have to stow in your gear bag. I think it?s sedate enough that you could use it in all but the most staid business environments, and it will certainly be a conversation starter!
