Musical Wine Glasses

by Edwin - on October 31st, 2012

I am quite sure that back when you were a wee little kid in school, you realized that different levels of water in glasses could create various ?notes? whenever your finger rubs on the rims of the glass. Why not be a whole lot more professional now that you are all grown up, with money in the bank to spare? I am referring to the 39.99 Musical Wine Glasses, where it puts a new spin on an age old trick, making a set of these spit out plenty of notes if you are musically inclined.

Each of the shapely glass will come finished with a gold luster, featuring musical notations that let you know which corresponds with various levels of liquid. As an example, a nice full glass might be a B flat, and when you have had your fill of fruit from the vine, you will end up playing a G sharp. Just make sure your finger is wet beforehand, while taking a firm grip on the base of the glass with the other while gently running the wet finger around the lip.

Google Play Store carrier billing for Verizon now live

Customers on Verizon can finally purchase Play Store content using their wireless accounts as Google and Verizon have activated carrier billing support. This is a feature that other carriers have had for quite some time, and whatever reason Verizon had for waiting this long to offer the option no longer matters ? it?s here, and should be here to stay.

Carrier billing is a great option for those who want to defer payments for apps, music, books, and more until they pay their Verizon bill each month. It?s an easy and convenient way to lump all your wireless-related purchases into one bill, though it won?t come without a bit of hesitation for those of you on family plans.

If you?re the account holder or the one who pays all the bills you?ll want to make sure to setup a PIN on the other phones on your account. Otherwise, little Jimmy could go on a game buying spree and drive your Verizon bill up to something you?d never imagined could happen. This is easily done in the settings menu of the Play Store if you fear the worst.

And if you just flat-out don?t want to take the risk Verizon allows you to turn carrier billing off altogether on its siteusing your My Verizon account. You can?t be too mad at having more options to purchase content in the Google Play Store so we?re thankful for this feature finally making its arrival. It might not show up in your Play Store right away so keep that in mind before you diagnose yourself with the case of the crazies for not being able to find it.

Nexus 4 SlimPort Now Available ? Uses a single cable to charge and output display (sorta)

When the Nexus 4 was announced yesterday, there was one spec from the feature list that caught our eye. It?s called ?SlimPort? and while it doesn?t quite have the ?cool? factor of the Miracast wireless display, it does manage to get the job done in a more efficient way.

Using a technology developed byAnalogix, you can use the Nexus 4?s micro USB port to output its display onto a television, monitor, or just about any display via a SlimPort accessory or DisplayPort cable (coming soon) but that?s not all. This new tech also allows the Nexus 4 to simultaneously charge and output its display, simplifying the whole process of getting your media from the Nexus 4 onto the big screen.

Analogix will be releasing a total of 4 SlimPort accessories in the coming weeks, but for now, the SP1002 HDMI connector is officially available for sale on Amazon (DVI, VGA and DisplayPort coming soon). It doesn?t run cheap, at $30, it?s not exactly an impulse buy. Still, for Android fans looking to snag a few Nexus essentials early, there?s no better time than right now.

LG Spectrum 2 Now Available On Verizon For $99.99

Verizon Wireless today announced its latest mid-range Android phone, the LG Spectrum 2 which is available for $99.99 with a two-year contract.

The LG Spectrum 2 features a large 4.7-inch 720p display and it uses a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Krait processor. The Spectrum 2 comes with 16GB of internal storage, an 8MP rear-facing camera, and a 1.3MP front-facing camera.

The new phone runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with LG?s skin laid on top of it. There is likely an update planned for some time in the future to a newer version of Android, but the press release doesn?t mention specific timing. Like other recent LG smartphones the LG Spectrum 2 includes a Quick Memo app which makes it easy to capture screenshots and draw on them with a finger.LG Spectrum 2

Other features include wireless charging and NFC. LG includes LG Tag+ stickers which use NFC to activatepreprogrammedfunctions on the phone. For example, users can place a sticker on a nightstand that puts the phone into silent mode so it doesn?t wake them up at night. It?s easier than digging through menus or holding the volume down button for a few seconds.

The LG Specturm 2 also has its own special accessory called theLG Premium Sleeve with Smart Display, which Verizon sells for $25. The sleeve protects the phone and offers a small window to the screen of the device. When inserted into the sleeve the small section of the screen that shows through the case will display information like new messages and missed calls.

At a cost of $99.99 on a two-year contract after a $50 mail-in rebate the LG Spectrum 2 is arguably a high-end phone for a mid-range price. The price puts it in the category with phones like the Motorola DROID RAZR M and the year-old iPhone 4, but its specs seem more on par with devices like the DROID RAZR HD. It?s not clear if the phone performs as well as the RAZR HD, but the specs are just about there.

Nokia Lumia 822 announced for Verizon Wireless

by Edwin - on October 30th, 2012

Verizon Wireless will be playing nice with the Windows Phone 8 mobile operating system, and the first handset to roll out with Verizon livery would come in the form of the Nokia Lumia 822 ? which is a variant of the stock Lumia 820. The change in model number makes it easier for folks to quickly identify with just which mobile carrier the device is on, and Verizon claims that the Nokia Lumia 822 was designed specifically for Verizon?s fast and ubiquitous 4G LTE network ? which incidentally, they are also the US? largest mobile carrier at the moment.

Specially designed for simplicity and ease-of-use, the Lumia 822 will be accompanied by exclusive Nokia features such as Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive, and Nokia City Lens, helping you get around in a jiffy with a technological slant. The bright 4.3-inch display with ClearBlack technology, coupled with a fast yet efficient 1.5GHz dual-core processor, ought to pack enough processing power for the average smartphone user. Oh yeah, just in case the 16GB of internal memory is not enough for your portable storage needs, there is also a microSD memory card slot that allows you to expand that further by another 32GB.

Charging its 1800mAh battery can be done the traditional way ? through plugging in a standard issue charging to get it going, but if you want to be a wee bit more future forward, there is always the wireless charging route made possible thanks to an accessory (purchased separately, of course) known as the Nokia Wireless Charging Shell. The Lumia 822 will also play nice with other accessories such as the Nokia DT-900 Wireless Charging Plate and the JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker.

In terms of imaging, the Nokia Lumia 822 will boast of an 8-megapixel shooter that has advanced Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash at the back, while the front-facing camera sports 720p HD resolution recording capability, and there are also a pair of integrated microphones for superior audio recording.

Verizon will make available the Nokia Lumia 822 in white, black and grey colors before Thanksgiving for $99.99 on a new two-year contract if you are interested.

Comfortably Nap Anywhere!

by Alison - on October 29th, 2012

?I love a good nap. Sometimes it?s the only thing that gets me out of bed in the morning. ? A classic quote from George Costanza on Seinfeld. Recall the episode where he builds a little nap area under his desk. There was space for his blanket, alarm clock, even a cup. Face it. Few of us get enough sleep. Napping anywhere sure would help on certain occasions.

Welcome to your new napping buddy, Ostrich Pillow. I?m guessing the picture might have gotten your attention. But seriously, if you have ever napped in a public place you know the challenges of a comfortable environment. Kawamura-Ganjavian, an architecture and design studio developed the concept and successfully finished theirKickstarterfundraising earlier this month with $195,094 (on a $70,000 goal). Studio Banana THiNGS is now producing and selling it. But what exactly is Ostrich Pillow? A combination of a pillow, cushion, bed and garment in one. The dark interior gives a little break from the world. Ostrich Pillow literally isolates you from the outside world once you slip it on. Tuck your hands in too if your surroundings allow. It enables you to power nap virtually anywhere. The product is machine washable too. Ostrich Pillow sells for$80 (plus shipping) on studiobananathings.comand is available to ship in the US, UK and Europe. So for those days where the need to nap takes over, look to Ostrich Pillow to give you a mini reprieve from the world.

Keep Track of Hurricane Sandy with Google Crisis Maps

by Ian Lim on October 29, 20120 comments

in Miscellaneous, News

Hurricane Sandy is coming and Google has created acrisis mapthat will hopefully help prepare you for the impact if you live in an area that may or will be affected by it. The map includes multiple layers including the storms current position, 3 day cone forecast, river flood outlooks, emergency shelters and evacuation routes amongst other things. Many layers can also be downloaded as .kmz files for use with Google Maps as well. Here?s hoping that technology can help minimize the effect on human lives. Hopefully all Gadgeteers in the affected areas are safe and prepared.

Google?s Nexus event threatened by Hurricane Sandy: will it be canceled? [UPDATE: CANCELED]

On Monday October 29th, Google is scheduled to host a big Android event in NYC. We?re expected to see some Nexus devices, potentially the LG Nexus 4 and Nexus 10. But for those of you not tuned into East Coast weather, Hurricane Sandy ? dubbed the ?Perfect Storm? by many meteorologists ? is threatening to delay Google?s October announcement for a 2nd straight year.

Current expectations are that the East Coast will be bombarded. Airports shut down. Electricity knocked out for several days. Public transit closed. Winds at 80+ MPH. Flooding in coastal areas. And this thing is supposed to touch down Sunday night, with the biggest impact on Monday into Tuesday. The same time Google?s event is supposed to occur.

It?s a bit surprising that the collision of mother nature, Google?s event schedule, and sensitive travel itineraries hasn?t caused Google to issue a public or private statement regarding the event?s status. I can?t imagine they would risk hosting an event without electricity, especially when traveling to the venue could prove unsafe and potentially life threatening. But as we speak, many potential attendees could be readying themselves to travel to NYC, where they will be greeted by a hurricane.

Don?t forget last year?s Google Android event was intended for CTIA in San Diego but later rescheduled for one week later in Hong Kong. Rumors swirled about the event being moved out of respect for Steve Jobs passing while others claimed the announcement was intended to avoid patent lawsuits in one way or another. Rumors aside, this would be the 2nd year in a row Google is forced to move or reschedule their event.

Google ? if you?re listening ? could you give us an update on the status of the event?

We took to Google+ and Facebook to ask our Phans if they thought Google would cancel/reschedule the event or surge along with fingers crossed. Here are some responses we received:

So what do YOU think? Let us know by voting in the poll below and leaving a comment!

LG Nexus 4 Quick Start Guide leaks

All Android fans are sad to hear that Google?s event in NYC has been canceled. Now we will have to wait more to hear about all those goodies, like Android 4.2, the new Nexus 7 version, the Nexus 10 and of course, that mighty LG Nexus 4 we have been drooling over for quite some time. If you need something to keep you strong, though, we have a new leak for you to stare at until Google decides to throw this delayed party.

Turns out LG Australia accidentally released a Quick Start Guide for the LG Nexus 4, which was quickly pulled from the site. The guide confirms the LG Nexus 4 name and the pulled site mentioned both an 8 GB and 16 GB version coming. We still have no idea if the 8 GB variant will come with that rumored $400 price tag, but we should find out more as soon as this event actually takes place.

And if you were wondering, the guide also brings an induction coil to light, meaning you will be able to charge this device wirelessly. Like NFC, this is a technology that hasn?t been widely adopted, but we love the fact that Google and other Android manufacturers are testing the waters. It might fail, it might not, but taking risks is key for tech evolution.

The device images are labeled with things like the front and back cameras, the notification light right under the screen, speaker slit and all other components. The hardware and design is everything we have been expecting so far, so download the PDF to take a look and let?s cry together over having to wait more.

HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich Update Still Missing Nearly Two Months Later

As the month of October winds down, there is still no word from HTC or Verizon as to the whereabouts of the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update or the Droid Incredible 2 Ice Cream Sandwich update, almost two months after the devices Android 4.0 updates were supposed to roll out.

Earlier this month, we received a credible tip from a source who said that the HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich update was in its final stages of testing, and at the time, Verizon apparently was on track to get the update rolled out to customers by the end of October.

Read: HTC ThunderBolt ICS Update Testing in Final Stages, Roll Out by End of October?.

tbolt24-570x600-546x575

The HTC ThunderBolt ICS update remains unreleased, nearly two months after a roll out was supposed to occur.

We sit just mere days from the end of the month, and unfortunately, none of the tell tale signs that usually emerge just prior to a roll out have emerged. No rumors, no whispers, no sign of the update or the Droid Incredible 2?s update on Verizon?s website ? something that usually happens a few days before an update, and sadly, no word from HTC or Verizon about roll out plans.

Instead, the most that we?ve seen out of HTC (Verizon never says anything) is a lengthy response to the inquiry from a Droid Incredible 2 owner on Facebook wherein the company says that the August roll out was only a target and not an actual roll out window.

Here is what HTC said earlier this month:

We are sorry and we are working on it. The end of August deadline was not a deadline at all. It was and an educated target date that we set ourselves so that we could give people some sort of timeline. Since the beginning we have said that those were only target dates and that there was always a possibility that it could take longer. He are constantly asking for the most recent news and as soon as we get soon as we get some answers to share, we will.

When we receive new information from our internal teams, we make it a point to pass that news along to the customers immediately. We believe in keeping our customers informed. At this point there is no additional information to share regarding the HTC Thunderbolt and ICS. We are still working with your service provider, Verizon, to reach a finalized version of the upgrade for their device. Until we reach that point, we can only answer questions to the best of our ability. Thank you.

That tune has not changed as we approach the end of October, with HTC saying that yes, it indeed still intends on updating the ThunderBolt, but no, it doesn?t have any word on when an update might roll out.

Read: HTC ThunderBolt Ice Cream Sandwich Situation is Unacceptable.

Screen Shot 2012-10-26 at 1.33.56 PM

Clearly, the companies are still trying to get these updates ready to go, otherwise they would have cancelled them. We have our fingers crossed that something transpires in regards to both updates in the next few days but at this point, the silence is pretty telling and it may be time for some owners to think about picking up another device.

Any optimists out there?

ROCCAT introduces a no-fray gaming mousepad, the Hiro 3D Supremacy

by Edwin - on October 27th, 2012

You can ask a gamer to go without a bath for a few days or perhaps just to exist on nothing but pepperoni pizza and fizzy drinks as their staple diet, but don?t ever, ever ask the gamer to use someone else?s rig for more than a day. It is somewhat akin to asking a Formula 1 driver to sit in the cockpit of somebody else?s car and ordering them to win the race. It just does not work, as a gaming rig is a very personal machine, one that has been built from the ground up to cater to one?s whims and fancies (according to the budget on hand, of course). Having said that, one important gaming accessory that should not be overlooked would be the mousepad. After all, once you have a top notch gaming mouse, you might as well go the whole nine yards and ensure your high end gaming mouse will glide along effortlessly on a surface worthy of its Teflon feet. Enter the ROCCAT Hiro 3D Supremacy Surface Gaming Mousepad.

This puppy hails from Germany, and is not quite ready for prime time action just yet. In fact, you will have to go through this Thanksgiving and Christmas without the ROCCAT Hiro 3D Supremacy in your stable of gaming peripherals, as it will only arrive in North America sometime in January next year. This is no ordinary gaming mousepad, as it opens up the category for a new high-performance cloth gaming pad. The main selling point? This is the world?s first mousepad that relies on an advanced new manufacturing process which results in smooth, rounded edges that will not ever fray, even after weeks and months of (abuse) extended use. The build process has been patented, creating an inseparable ?power bond? between upper and lower surfaces so that this mousepad delivers unrivaled durability.

As for its gaming surface, the ROCCAT Hiro 3D Supremacy changes the game yet again, boasting of an exclusive vulcanized silicone playing field that sports a complex 3D structure, which ROCCAT claims will be able to deliver significantly increased gliding speed and control on both the X and Y axis. In short, your hand will be able to enjoy the ultimate command capability during even the most demanding of gaming sessions. Too bad there is no word on pricing at press time, but we do hope to find out more.

Essential College Note Taking Apps for iPad

The iPad is a great college companion, and with the right note taking apps it can make taking notes easier during the semester and cramming for exams less frustrating during midterms.

After trying to take notes on paper and on a laptop, I tried taking notes on the iPad. The iPad is the best way for me to take notes in college classes.

The iPad is the best note taking tool for my college experience because it is lightweight, fits ontiny college ?desks? and allows me to draw formulas and symbols on the touchscreen. It also allows me to take photos of whiteboards for easy archiving.

iA Writer and Notability are the iPad note taking apps I rely on to get the most out of class, and keep track of all the notes.

iA Writer

iawriter

Extra keyboard symbols.

iA Writer is a great application for taking simple text notes. The interface of the app is very clean easy to use. The app also features Dropboxsynchronization which makes it easy to acces notes all of the time.

One thing that makes iA Writer even better than the simple Notes app is the amount of keyboard modifications that the app implements. Many commonly used symbols, and navigational keys are stored in the top bar of the keyboard.

iA Writer for iPad is an essential part of taking notes on the iPad and well worth the $0.99 price. There?s also an iPhone and a Mac version so users can access notes on other devices automatically.

Notability

Notability is another great note taking app offers more features than iA Writer. While iA Writer is great for plain text notes it is not optimized for equations or special diagrams. This is where Notability steps in.

Notability is great at taking notes from hand drawings, to typed text, and even audio all on the same page. Notes can be searched for key terms, which helps when it comes time to study. Users can choose paper color options and lined or graph paper.

One other area where Notability excels is that all notes can be exported and also imported into the app via Dropbox, Box, iDisk, or WebDAV.

Notability for iPadis a steal at$0.99.
