New iPhone 4S Commercials Show Off Siri Snow Day, Camera and iCloud

Apple continues to roll out new iPhone 4S commercials, debuting three new ads this weekend. The new iPhone 4S ads focus in on the tangible benefits of owning the new iPhone, something competing ads often gloss over.

In the new trio of TV ads, Apple drives home the use of Siri, the improved camera and the benefits of Apple?s iCloud service.

For more on how you can take advantage of these features, checkout our ultimate iOS5 Guide -25 Tips to Master iOS 5, Unleash Siri and Maximize iCloud.

With winter fast approaching in much of the country, and already here along the Eastern seaboard, I?m pretty sure kids everywhere will be asking Siri about snow, and adults will be groaning at the answers.

Siri is the new personal assistant built into Apple?s iPhone 4S that can help you with a number of simple tasks. Developers are trying to bring Siri to the iPhone 4, but Apple does not support the port. In the video below, you will see a number of possible uses of Siri.

For more: What is Siri?

If snow scares you off, why not take a tropical vacation and record it on your new iPhone 4S camera. The second iPhone 4S ad hits home on the speed andqualityof the new camera, as well as the ability to use the volume button to take a picture. The video shown below highlights these features, and the ability to share your photos.

Pulling up the rear, Apple?s new iPhone 4S commercials also highlight the use of iCloud to keep your devices connected. T-Mobile rolls out the Samsung Exhibit II 4G

by Edwin - on October 30th, 2011

T-Mobile has a spanking new smartphone for you to consider if you are on the lookout for one ? and their latest effort would be the Samsung Exhibit II 4G. This could very well be considered as one of the more affordable 4G smartphones out there, which comes in good time too, cosnidering the kind of economic situation the world is in at the moment. The Samsung Exhibit II 4G will feature rich entertainment features, and even better is the fact that you can pick it up without having to sign up for any annual contract, or if you so desire, there is also a two-year contract option ? and you can choose either.

Another interesting fact is this ? the Samsung Exhibit II 4G is also the first no annual contract 4G smartphone that will be sold at most Walmart stores. For the rest of the country who want one on either a 2-year contract or without, they will have to wait until November 2nd.

Just what kind of hardware specifications does the Samsung Exhibit II 4G carry? For starters, it comes with a 3.7? WVGA TFT touchscreen display and will be powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor which should be beefy enough to deliver all your entertainment needs without missing a beat, not to mention letting you browse through the Internet in a jiffy. Not only that, since you are on T-Mobile, you can gain access to thousands of popular TV shows and movies via T-Mobile TV in mobile HD and Samsung Media Hub.

It will run on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system right out of the box so that you need not worry about waiting for a software update, and not only that, since this is an Android-powered smartphone, it will open up access to a bunch of Google??s most popular applications and services such as Google Maps and Gmail, in addition to thousands of others over at the Android Market.

Coming in a stylish marine blue color, the Samsung Exhibit II 4G will also sport a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera with flash, where it can also record video. Want to make video calls? Not a problem, there is a front-facing camera that does that.

Company Page
If you decide to opt for a 2-year contract, then it will cost you a mere $29.99 ? isn?t that cheap enough? That is, it comes
after a $50 mail-in-rebate card.

Deal Alert: Best Buy Offering 32GB HP TouchPads For $150 ? But There?s A Catch

Well, color my goose and slap me silly! Looks like there was still a few more HP TouchPads stashed somewhere after their big fire sale to go around. As it turns out, Best Buy will begin selling the 32GB version of the Android-hackable TouchPads for $150 but this time under one condition ? customers looking to take advantage of the deal must buy an HP computer to go along with it. Those shysters.

The deal kicks off on November 1st and you best believe Best Buy will be advertising the deal across all the usual channels like the front page of their Sunday ads. Oh- if you?re feeling a bit wary about purchasing an HP computer after you know ? the whole talk of them pulling out of the PC market, word on the street is HP may have changed their minds. Nice to know your computer will at least offer some level of support. HP TouchPads on the other hand? well, you?re just going to throw CM7 on there anyway.

YouTube Going To War Against Cable

By partnering with so many different media companies that the flood of original content will leave cable as we know it in ruins. The incredibly long list of participant?s in YouTube?s drive to supplant people?s viewing habits includes entire channels, magazines, the WWE, and production outfits galore. (There?s even a hipster comedy show.) This latest offensive was already in the works a long time ago and occasionally surfaced in the news. Now it is on the verge of becoming reality.

YouTube logo

In a blog post released yesterday, Google Inc. owned YouTube announced its plans. The juiciest part read:

Our goal with this channels expansion, along with thegrantsandeducationalprograms we?ve launched in the past year, is to bring an even broader range of entertainment to YouTube, giving you more reasons to keep coming back again and again. And for advertisers, these channels will represent a new way to engage and reach their global consumers.

The first of these new original channels will appear on YouTube starting next month and will continue over the next year. They?ll be available to you on any internet-connected device, anywhere in the world, with all the interactivity and social features of YouTube built right in.

Modern Warfare 3 Disc Stolen From Warehouse, Triggering Piracy Craze

Ah, humans and their foibles. Rather than wait for the official release, news has emerged that a warehouse/secure location housing Modern Warfare 3 discs was burglarized, resulting in a pirated MW3 that?s been going the rounds. Activision has sprung into action to avert the crisis, even going so far as to allow anyone who?s partaken in the stolen goods to surrender their games.

Modern Warfare 3

The details that have surfaced reveal a familiar modus in game piracy. Turns out a person working for a Fresno-based shipping warehouse got a hold of disc two. Since Modern Warfare 3 is a two-disc package, there was the slight reassurance that the whole game hadn?t been leaked.

Still, such actions post a threat to Activision?s hottest title, especially less than two weeks before it finally explodes all over the place. Analysts have already predicted wall to wall sales for MW3 and having a piracy pandemic at this critical time might hurt the projected numbers, like more than a billion dollars in sales.

To avoid this nightmarescenario, Activision are fighting back old school. They?re literally going door to door (not sure which doors though) asking people to either turn over pirated discs or delete files of the game. So far it has worked, with one pirate going so far as to post a message on Craigslist encouraging people to turn it over rather than face a steep fine of $5,000.

Sony Ericsson Announces Android 2.3.4 Rollout For All Countries ? Adds Bonus Features

Back in September, Sony Ericsson announced that they would being rolling out the Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread update to their devices, unfortunately for us here in the states (and other parts of the world), it was only for Nordic countries. Thankfully, today, SE announced that the 2.3.4 update has begun rolling out for the rest of the world but with a few added changes. Highlights of the update include:

  • Google Talk with Video Chat for smartphones with front-facing cameras
  • Updated Facebook inside Xperia? functionality for enhanced like, share and discover abilities.
  • Xperia? smartphones introducing world?s first 3D Sweep Panorama functionality powered by Sony.
  • 16x video zoom
  • The software upgrade will enable consumers to turn their Xperia? smartphone into a mini-mobile PC by connecting USB peripherals (mouse, keyboard or game controller) to Sony Ericsson LiveDock? multimedia station. Connect the smartphone to a TV via HDMI to get a big screen experience.
  • Gesture input - text input by swiping the finger from one letter to the next
  • WiFi DLNA
  • Screen capture - allows the user to share a screen grab from anywhere in the phone.

Sony Ericsson devices that can look forward to the update are just about their entire lineup and include the Xperia Arc, Play, Neo, Mini, Mini Pro, Pro, Ray, Active, Neo V, Arc S and the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman. For a video walkthrough of the new features (you have to see ?USB on the go?) check out the video below.

Sony Ericsson (soon to be just ?Sony?) has quickly proven to be one of the better Android OEM?s, offering continuous support in regards to updates and with their work in the developer community. Now all that?s left is for SE to deliver some shiny dual-core devices to the US and they?ll be golden.

Thanks, Vlad!

Google Maps Will Soon Include Street View for Businesses

Google Maps is about to get a lot more interesting as Google has unveiled a program called Business Photos from Google which will allow businesses to show off 360-degree street view and interior imagery of their business on the company?s Places page. Google is currently taking applications from businesses in 37 select cities around the globe.

How does it work?

It?s fairly straightforward.

If you live in one of the cities that is currently under the program?s umbrella, you apply and if selected, Google will send photographers out to take photos of the interior of the business, a process that takes about an hour.

Once completed, the Places page will look something like this.

Google Maps

Google touts the benefits of the program saying that these ?interior photographs and panoramic imagery are a great way to show potential customers what your business is really like. By enhancing your Place page, business photos will help showcase your business to potential customers.?

Let?s face it.

Most of us have shown up at a place of business only to find that it wasn?t what we expected so this is definitely helpful for consumers too. This is definitely a neat addition to both Google Maps and Places and if everything goes smoothly in the launch cities, we expect this to start popping up in other markets around the globe.

SofShell for the iPad 2 from Sofproducts

by Mark R - on October 28th, 2011

I have reviewed a lot of covers made for the back of the iPad like Bracketron?s Back-iT and the AViiQ Smart Case, and this SofShell by Sofproducts falls under that product category.

As its name implies, the SofShell goes for a soft rubber feel rather than a hard plastic or metal shell. It also has a unique ability of being transparent. You would be able to completely see through it if not for the interior case texture that keeps it on and makes it easy to peel off.

It ?fits like a glove? and is able to reduce shock by 43 percent. Sofproducts also states that their product is ?anti-slip?, which means that you could rest an iPad 2 with a SofShell backing on an angle that is 70 degrees, and it would not slide off.

I mentioned before that the SofShell has a rubbery feel, but it is not rubber, silicone, neoprene, or urethane. I?m not certain what it is, but it is medical-grade material that is hypoallergenic and latex free.

I reviewed the SofShell for the iPad2, which is not compatible with the first version of the iPad and is available here for about $49.50. You can get a Sofshell for the original iPad, as well as a SofShell for the iPad 2 with a SmartCover on the SofProducts web site.

Nook Color 2 Reportedly Being Shipped To Barnes & Noble Stores ? Arrives Nov 7th

According to The Digital Reader, Barnes & Noble will begin shipping out its all new and improved Nook Color 2 to stores on November 7th. Apparently, B&N will be sprucing up their in-store Nook kiosk to more of an actual department complete with LED TV?s and registers for checking out customers on the spot. Still left up in the air are specs and pricing, heck ? this may no longer even be an Android device but given the success and versatility of the OS ? and the fact they used it in the ?old one,? I don?t see them moving onto something else. B&N has also been kicking up development for the e-reader/tablet, most likely in anticipation of this new model. Let?s see if they be able to pack enough punch in this thing to compete with Amazon?s hugely successful Kindle Fire. Gotta love competition.

Wooden Memory Table Comes With A Camera (Video)

That?s about it, really. Imagine a plain wooden desk with an extended arm fitted with a camera. The camera takes pictures of whatever you?re doing at the desk and there?a photographic archive of your, uh, desk time.

Delen Memory Table

If this strikes you as odd, why, then don?t be stricken by oddness. Let us explain: David Franklin believes that in an age of social sharing, people should bother recording their everyday and exposing it to the worlds. While no one is installing cameras by their toilet seats yet, David has gone as far as to build furniture suited for the purpose.

Say hello to the Delen memory table, which is a plain wooden table that has a long arm supporting a camera. The camera snaps pics of what?s going on at the desk and then shares it via the usual social spaces.

It?s hardly a product and verges more on the homemade, maybe even Etsy-suitable craftsmanship with a it of tech thrown in. For the sake of creativity, this scores quite high in our taste.

There?s even a video to better explain its function:

iPhone 4S Jailbreak Successful, Not Ready For Public

The iPhone 4S has finally been jailbroken. The news comes today via @MuscleNerd, a well respected iPhone hacker, who has been hard at work on an iPhone 4S Jailbreak.

While iOS 5 has been jailbroken since it was released, theiPhone 4S and the iPad 2 use Apple?s new A5 processor, which has prevented us from jailbreaking these devices.

(Read:iPhone 4S Review)

According to MuscleNerd, the iPhone 4S has been jailbroken. Unfortunately, it is not ready for public release just yet.

VERY preliminary 4S JB:http://twitpic.com/76vcp4http://twitpic.com/76vct2(Huge missing pieces prevent public release. LOTS of work left) ? @MuscleNerd

You can see visual proof of the iPhone 4S jailbreak below.

iPhone 4S Jailbreak

iPhone 4S Jailbreak Screenshot

MuscleNerd is also sharing a video of the iPad 2 jailbroken with the same process. The video description tells us that there are, ?Lots of hurdles left, no ETAs.? Hopefully we will see an iPhone 4S jailbreak and a iPad 2 jailbreak at the same time.

As I already mentioned, there are many reasons to be excited about an iPhone 4S jailbreak. It is great to see progress being made, and hopefully we will have an iPhone 4S jailbreak release in a few weeks or months.

Jailbrekaing allows you to install and run applications and tweaks to that Apple doesn?t allow into the App Store. These can range from adding new widgets to the notification center totrickingyour phone into thinking you are on WiFi so that you can make Facetime calls over 3G. Jailbreaking is not illegal, but it will void your iPhone warranty with Apple.

For more on iPhone Jailbreaking, read5 Reasons to Jailbreak guide. You can find our more about why we jailbreak by checking out ourTop hidden Cydia gemsandTop 5 Cydia apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Android Fragmentation Put On Display For All To See ? Shows Embarassing History Of Support

An image displaying Android?s fragmented ?orphans? is making its way around the web today. The graph tracks Android smartphones still ?under contract? today but were left in the dust when it came to updates (whether it be a firmware update or bug fixes), as well as prices, manufacturer and release/discontinuation dates. The chart was made after news that Nexus One owners would not be seeing an OS update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Here are some of the facts:

  • 7 of the 18 Android phones never ran a current version of the OS.
  • 12 of 18 only ran a current version of the OS for a matter of weeks or less.
  • 10 of 18 were at least two major versions behind well within their two year contract period.
  • 11 of 18 stopped getting any support updates less than a year after release.
  • 13 of 18 stopped getting any support updates before they even stopped selling the device or very shortly thereafter.
  • 15 of 18 don?t run Gingerbread, which shipped in December 2010.
  • In a few weeks, when Ice Cream Sandwich comes out, every device on here will be another major version behind.
  • At least 16 of 18 will almost certainly never get Ice Cream Sandwich.

According to the graph, the results are (supposedly) embarrassing to Android users and display the sad cruel reality of how fragmentation continues to hurt consumers ? especially Android consumers. Why is this being pointed out? Apparently consumers are being screwed when they buy an Android device, app developers end up targeting older versions of Android in order to maximize market reach and security risks are sometimes never addressed from a manufacturer on older devices.

The solution? Well, it?s simple. Stop buying cheap, low-end Android devices that can barely run the outdated OS they?re being shipped with. If you buy a used G1, you really expect HTC to update it to Ice Cream Sandwich after 3 years? As consumers we have a voice and we let our wallets do the talking. Support manufacturers that regularly update their devices and if you?re phone is nearing 2-years old, well ? it might be time to upgrade. The mobile world moves quick. Technology moves fast. Google moves even faster. Remember, it?s not Google?s fault or job to update your device to the newest firmware. It?s the manufacturer?s.

How to Enable Private Browsing in Safari on iOS 5

One of the lesser talked about features that Apple included in its iOS 5 update for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch was the ability to turn on private browsing in the Safari browser. And because it hasn?t been talked about extensively, it?s possible that many of you either haven?t heard of it or have absolutely no idea how to enable it. Well, we?re here to help and we?ll get you browsing the web in private in no time.

The first thing you?ll want to do is head to ?Settings? on your iDevice. It?s that gray icon with the gears.

Next, scroll down and tap on Safari. This will bring up a bunch of options for the browser.

iOS 5

Under the Privacy section, you?ll see Private Browsing. Flip the switch to on and you?re in business.

Once enabled, you?ll be able to browse the web without the browser storing any of your data. That means log-in information, the websites you visited, searches you have made, and the like.

Perfect for those of you who shop for birthdays or the holidays from your phone and have family members or significant others that are snoops.

iOS 5

If you already have a browser running you?ll be prompted by the above screen. When you?re done, close Safari and all of your private information will be gone.

It?s as easy that.

There is another option though should you choose to fork over a little cash.

Encyclopaedia Britannica

You can pay $1.99 per month which will net you the more than 80,000 articles in the software?s database. They are fully searchable and you can save them for offline viewing, send or save the articles or mark them as favorites.

If you currently are the owner of an EB.com account, you can just download the app and use it free of charge just by logging in.

You can find it on the iOS App Store for download right here.
