Shoot Now, Focus Later ? Lytro is Working on Multi-Focus Cameras

by I Yarom on June 30, 20111 comment

in Digital Cameras and Gear,News

Lytro wants to change the way we take photos by introducing the concept of ?living-pictures?. A ?living-picture? is a picture that the viewer can change the focus of it (check out the sample images on Lytro?s site). Lytro uses a technology based on (4D) light-field photography, which capture not only the amount of light at each pixel, but also how much light arrives along each ray. In order to capture the additional data, it uses more pixels, which means lower picture resolution. The innovation behind Lytho technology is in the ability to capture the ?living-pictures? in a single shot on a similar form-factor camera. Another advantage of the technology is the ability to shoot a 3D images from a single lens using a single shot. Lytro CEORen Ng said that he expects to see the first Lytho camera in the market by the end of the year, but no additional details are available at this point.

Coral Tools Concept has Screwdrivers, Wine Opener, and Hammer Guide

I always misplace my screwdrivers. The things tend to roll under stuff and get put way in the back of a drawer where I can?t find them. If a screwdriver had a different design, it would be easier to keep up with. The Coral Tools concept from designers Jinyoung Choi, Junpyo Kim, Hyungwoo Uhm, Joonhyoung Seo & Kijo Son might be exactly what I need to be able to keep track of my tools.

Coral Tools

The Coral Tool is a concept that puts four different tools on one roughly pyramid shaped object. One of the arms has a flat tip screwdriver, the other has a Phillips head driver, the other is a wine bottle opener, and the final one is a holder for nails that keeps you from smashing a finger.

That nail holder is my favorite. You put the nail into the guide, and hold the tool. Then you whack the Coral Tool on the top and the nail gets started without you missing and hitting your fingers. I hope this concept makes the leap into the real world.

T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide finally announced

by Edwin - on June 29th, 2011

T-Mobile has at long last, announced their latest myTouch 4G Slide smartphone which will be part of T-Mobile?s exclusive line of myTouch devices. The myTouch 4G Slide is said to deliver the most advanced camera of any smartphone with zero shutter lag ? now this is something that is surprising since Android-powered smartphones tend to fall behind the iPhone when it comes to camera technology.

Having said that, you can?t just waltz into any T-Mobile store at the moment to bring home a myTouch 4G Slide since it is expected to be available only in July ? now, now, that isn?t too far away, is it? It is already the end of June, and you can sniff July out around the corner. The naming convention of the myTouch 4G Slide also gives the game away when it comes to 4G connectivity support, so you know what you?re getting with this smartphone right from the get go.

It is said that the myTouch 4G Slide will be accompanied by an 8-megapixel camera with a dual LED flash, coupled with a bunch of other advanced digital camera features such as improved low-light performance, zero shutter lag, SweepShot that lets you capture panoramic shots by sweeping across an entire scene in a single motion, ClearShot HDR to shoot objects in bright settings without being affected by high-contrast lighting, BurstShot to capture multiple photos in a quick burst, support for America?s largest 4G network, and a dedicated dedicated camera button and one-touch access amongst others.

Heck, you can even shoot full HD video if you want to, while all your videos can be edited straight from the device without having to hook up to a computer prior to that. This is a device that will roll off HTC?s production lines, sporting a 3.7? WVGA super LCD touch-screen display, a slide-out full-QWERTY keyboard if a Swype-enhanced virtual keyboard is not your cup of tea, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and HTC Sense 3.0. A 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor will run proceedings from within in the myTouch 4G Slide.

You can choose from black and khaki colors for the T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide when it finally arrives. Any takers?

Sprint HTC EVO 3D Review Roundup

TheHTC EVO 3D isSprint?s latest 4G smartphone and the reviews are starting to roll in. Below is a roundup of what HTC EVO 4G reviews that we?ve enjoyed reading. The HTC EVO 3D is Sprint?s latest flagship phones and definitely worth a look if you?re switching to Sprint or due for an upgrade.

EVO 3D

HTC EVO 3D, Sprint's Latest 4G Phone

Jonathan Geller from BGR calls the EVO 3D his favorite phone on Sprint:

It took a couple days for the HTC EVO 3D to grow on me ? from the build and design, to the user interface, to the 3D aspect ? but after spending a week with it, I can confidently say this is my favorite Sprint phone, hands down.

Cory Gunther from SlashGear almost calls the 3D on the EVO 3D a gimmick:

The 3D feature may seem like a gimmick to some, and in a way I?d almost agree with them but the games sure are fun. The build quality is as good as it gets just like all of HTC?s hardware.

Jared Newman from The Technologizer does call 3D on the EVO 3D a gimmick:

I don?t think highly of gimmicks, and the Evo 3D?s tentpole feature hasn?t proven that it?s anything but. I?d much rather have a phone that excels at the basics, which is why I gave the HTC Sensation 4G such high praise. Unfortunately, smartphones tend to be tied to specific wireless carriers in the United States, and for now, the Evo 3D is Sprint?s only option with a dual-core processor. I wish that was something to get excited about.

EVO 3D

Paul Miller from ThisIsMyNext takes a different stance:

Is this phone good because of 3D or in spite ofit? Well, neither, actually. HTC was smart to make that part of the device not obtrusive in any way ? you can whole your two-year contract with the phone in 2D, if you want. Still, when the 3D works, it?s impressive, and everyone I?ve shown it to feels the same way. Headache-inducing? Yes. Perfect? Not one bit. But there?s something quite compelling, just a few degrees above novelty of being able to snap a 3D photo of your friends and show them, right then, without any peripheral headwear.

John V. from PhoneArena agrees:

Even more, its 3D display isn?t simply a novel thing that some people might get bored with over time ? namely due to its flexibility in the gaming department and easy content sharing on the go.

EVO 3D

Myriam Jorie from Engadget likes the HTC Sensation more:

Ultimately, we?ve come to think of the EVO 3D as a Sensation with a lesser camera, cheaper materials, worse battery life, and without the ability to roam worldwide.

And finally, Chris Burns from Android Community has nothing but praise for the phone:

This device is going to be good as a massively powerful Android for your pocket for at least the next year, at which point quad-core devices will be in full swing and you?ll want to trade up for whatever new EVO they?ve released by then.

?

So it seems like there is a pretty big split as to whether or not the 3D on the HTC EVO 3D is too gimmicky or not. For the most part though, the reviews label the HTC EVO 3D as a fantastic device and a worthy successor to the EVO 4G. And that?s not surprising, considering the extremely enticing list of specification that is possesses.

For those of you that needed a little more information, you can find my analysis of the HTC EVO 3D and the Motorola Photon 4G right here. Who knows, maybe you?ll find yourself waiting a couple more weeks before you purchase this thing.

Will Google+ Win and Do You Have a Google+ Invite?

Looking around the web, we see plenty of press and media playing with Google+ for example Marshall Kirkpatrick from ReadWriteWeb who put together a nice first hand experience after a night of diving in. Spoiler: he loves it.Then we?ve got the optimistically pessimistic realists (does that makes sense) from XKCD who tell it like it is (and it?s funny) below.

But truth be told, the vast majority are without Google+ and you have to think this is by design. Whether Google is doing this to try and create a feeling of exlusivity as they did with GMail?s invites system or whether they want to drum up buzz while beating out any bugs in the beta, I?m not quite sure. Either way? a quick show of hands:

The rollout strategy will have a big affect on the potential for Google+ success, sure, but it?s the actual service itself that will make or break it as a viable alternative to Facebook. If you think about the concept and see some examples of ?Circles? in action, you can start to grasp how this affects the concept of social networking and how you might use it.

Think about some ?circles? you might make:

  • All co-workers
  • Work friends
  • School friends
  • Kickball team
  • Awesome people who read Phandroid
  • Hunting buddies
  • Vegetarian club

You may be MUCH more inclined to share things if you can share them with a specific group. Not only that, but you will sharing things you wouldn?t normally have shared because they pertain to the particular interests of one of your circles.

It?s pretty brilliant if you ask me and I?m incredibly excited to see this showdown with Facebook. Will Facebook counter and implement this same strategy with a different name, for example expanding the concept of ?Groups? to make them more flexible and upfront? Will Facebook ignore the initative altogether- out of site, out of mind?

How about a couple more polls:

Lastly? a lot of the potential success depends on who is willing to adopt. So? will you?

DXG offers low-budget 3D stills

by Mark R - on June 28th, 2011

What you are seeing here is a new type of 3D viewer from DXG, creator of a lot of terrific HD camcorders.

This 3D viewer can only take still shots, and I got to try it out. You get the 3D that you may or may not have been looking for, but you really have to jump through a lot of hoops for it.

What happens is that you take pictures with the dual-lens camera. The viewscreen on the back of the camera is only 1.44 inches, and you can see the images in realtime. You can then print them out and put them in the included paper 3D viewer for a ?Viewmaster? effect.

When it comes to printing them out, I had trouble at first. I used the included USB cable, but it didn?t quite work. I eventually ejected the SD card (which is not included with the product) and inserted it into my printer?s slot. Thanks to PictBridge technology, it recognized my 3D images and printed them out in the form of two 2D images that merge together to form a 3D image in the viewer. I hope it works without any difficulty on other printers.

I tried this out with ordinary 8 x 11 paper, and it worked, but the company recommends 4 x 6 photo paper. There is a clear difference, and I mean that in every sense of the word.

In all honesty, we are looking at one of the cheapest ways to bring 3D to the average consumer. Granted, it is in still form, and not for video. If you want it, you can get it in various colors for about $69.99 on the official DXG site.

Droid Charge Is Latest Verizon 4G LTE Smartphone to See Price Drop

As we get closer to the launch of the Motorola Droid Bionic, it?s no surprise that some of the other 4G LTE smartphones on Verizon are seeing their prices get slashed by online retailers. Just recently, the LG Revolution dropped to a mere $99 on a new contract and Samsung?s Droid Charge is the latest victim of a price slashing at both Wirefly and Amazon.

Droid Charge

While both retailers have dropped the price of the Droid Charge, one offer is considerably more attractive than the other. Amazon currently lists the Droid Charge at $180 on a new two year contract with Verizon while Wirefly has dropped the phone down to an extraordinary low price of $130. That?s a pretty good price for a phone that has only been out for a few months and boasts 4G LTE speeds.

And, in order to sweeten the offer that much more, the retailers are offering free shipping on top of the discount as well.

It?s unclear how long these prices will last but with the Droid Bionic on the way this summer, we don?t see the prices getting too much higher than that $180 price point that Amazon currently has going on.

You can find Amazon?s offer here and Wirefly?s offer here.

Mouse Pad that Doubles as a Travel Pouch

by Julie on June 27, 20110 comments

in Laptop Gear,News,Travel Gear

I love multipurpose products, so the Mouse Pad Travel Pouch from Smartfish caught my eye and I thought it might interest all of you as well. The Travel Pouch is a 9? diameter neoprene mouse pad that zips up to form a handy pouch. I typically don?t even use a mouse pad these days with my optical mice, but if you are a traveler that still prefers to use one, this product will give you that capability while also offering storage for small items while you?re commuting from location to location.

The Smartfish Mouse Pad Travel Pouch will be available in early July in blue and black for $14.95.

Jabra EASYCALL headset launched on AT&T stores exclusively

by Edwin - on June 27th, 2011

Jabra has been right there from the very beginning where Bluetooth headsets are concerned, I remember the extremely early days when colored displays on cell phones were just starting to proliferate, while those wearing Bluetooth headsets were seen to be like Borg walking on earth. Well, while colored displays on handsets are a given these days, it can still be quite hard to get used to those wearing Bluetooth headsets despite it being rather common.

This means the Bluetooth headset market is alive and kicking, and Jabra is making more than enough money to continue rolling out newer models. Their latest release would be the Jabra EASYCALL headset that is available exclusively at AT&T retail stores and online from today onwards. The EASYCALL is so named because it boasts of easy-to-use, intuitive controls, where it will be accompanied by the Jabra CRUISER2, which by itself is a popular in-car speakerphone that boasts of voice controls and superior sound for hands-free calling on the road, making it a whole lot safer to drive and carry out a conversation simultaneously.

The Jabra EASYCALL is touted to be the perfect entry-level Bluetooth headset option, especially so for one who does not have any previous experience with such a headset. The use of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology delivers crystal clear sound and voice, while it has a rather pocket friendly price of just $32 which will not break the bank or this month?s budget, and yet is groovy enough to hook up to a couple of devices simultaneously. This makes it easier to transition between work and family calls.

Apart from that, the EASYCALL will also ship with automatic volume control, next generation StatusDisplay icons for easy viewing, an on-off button slider, and spoken Voice Guidance which lets you know the current battery level and connectivity status, delivering an intuitive and seamless Bluetooth headset experience.

As for the Jabra CRUISER2 which will continue where the hugely successful CRUISER left off (how creative in the naming convention), it will come with improved sound quality, Caller ID, a speakerphone that ?talks? to the user, and Voice Announcements which offer audio guidance when setting-up the device and to clearly announce connectivity status and low battery levels. Expect the Jabra CRUISER2 to be the more expensive option at $79.99.

10 Chances To Win A New Toshiba Thrive Honeycomb Tablet

I may have got word of this a little late in the game but apparently Toshiba has been running a promotional campaign for their upcoming Toshiba Thrive Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablet. Basically, they?re giving away some of their tablets for free when you complete various ?missions? on their site.

First mission was to ?Like? your favorite new feature of their tablet. Mission 2 involved picking your favorite color for the tablet. Mission 3, from what I could tell, was dressing up as a robot and showing up in front of Universal Studios, Hollywood. Now, for their current mission, you have to watch a special unboxing video for the tablet and once the video reaches 10,000 views, it will unlock a special code you can then redeem on their site for a chance to take home your very own Toshiba Thrive.

I love it when manufacturers have fun contests like these that not only get people buzzing, but give them free stuff for their efforts. And I?m all for free stuff. Let us know if you guys win anything!
