Report: Facebook will unveil custom Android interface using proprietary camera and messaging apps

Facebook is hosting an Android-oriented event next week and speculation is sure to run wild. Reports emerging today may shed some light on what we can expect come April 4th. According to the most recent chatter, Facebook will unveil a custom version of Android with a focus on the social network?s apps and experience.

Think of it like Facebook?s version of Amazon?s custom Kindle Fire UI. Based on Android, the new build will tie directly into a user?s Facebook profile, bringing interactions via the social network front and center. Facebook Messenger and a presumably Instagram-oriented camera will replace the stock Android implementations.

The new OS experience will launch on an HTC-made phone, likely the Myst of rumors past, but could eventually find its way to other hardware. The goal is to prioritize Facebook, bringing it from a secondary app experience to the forefront of a user?s mobile world. We?ll keep our ear to the ground as the date quickly approaches when Facebook will make their big announcements official.

Dishonored Custom Xbox 360 Controller

Dishonored Custom Xbox 360 Controller

We?ve seen our share of customized Xbox controllers, but this Dishonored-inspired Xbox 360 controller is one of the best. It was designed by Devin Smith of End of Line Designs and this is not just some painting or skinning of the controller. It is a real work of art.
dishonored_controller
As you can see, almost every component on the controller is custom: the buttons, the grips and even the Microsoft Xbox logo with the Dishonored symbol which looks like it lights up. The metal ?stitching? effect is awesome, but I wonder if it makes playing a pain.

Great work Devin. This is a beauty of a controller.

I?ve played with Tasker and it?s a fantastic and powerful program allowing you to automate and manipulate all sorts of settings though it can be a bit complicated to wrap your head around at times. Well worth a look though if you want to extend the functionality of your Android smartphone or tablet. No idea how long it will be on sale for so if you?re interested get on to it!

Latest factory images posted for Sprint and Verizon?s Galaxy Nexus

For those that like to live life on the edge, it?s always good to have a backup plan. In the case of Android users, that comes in the form of an official factory image, which can be flashed to restore a phone to its original state should anything go awry. Now they have refreshed the list with the latest factory images for the Verizon and Sprint versions of the Galaxy Nexus.

If you own either device and do any sort of root work or tinkering with phone?s code, it?s always a good idea to download the factory image and store it in a safe place. Charge your devices faster with the ChargeDr

by Janet Cloninger on March 29, 20131 comment

digital-innovations-chargedr

If you find that charging your USB-chargeable devices takes too long, you may be interested in the ChargeDr USB Charge Booster from Digital Innovations. The ChargeDr uses an unspecified method of boosting the power from your computer?s USB port, so that a normal5V, 0.5A-2.1A port always outputs5V, up to 2.1A of power. The ChargeDr is about the size of a normal USB flash drive, so it?s convenient to carry when you travel and are more likely to need a quick boost in power. You just plug it in the USB port, and then plug your device?s cable into the ChargeDr. Data at the Digital Innovations website shows that a 3rd-gen iPad can charge in about 340 minutes compared to more than 1300 minutes without the ChargeDr, or a Kindle Fire HD will charge in about 240 minutes compared to more than 1200 minutes. It can even be used with AC wall adapters for a little extra boost. The ChargeDr works with Apple products using either the 30-pin or Lightning connectors and with most devices using a standard microUSB cable. (It doesn?t work with the Google Nexus 7 (non-standard microUSB) or devices that use a proprietary connector, such as some Samsung, Acer, and Asus tablets.) The ChargeDr is $29.99 at Digital Innovations.

Hands-on: PlayJam GameStick, the Android micro gaming console [VIDEO]

Android gaming is about to take off in a big way thanks to the the OUYA and PlayJam GameStick getting ready to enter into the mini-console war. Where as the OUYA is emphasizing a beefy NVIDIA GPU to keep graphics relatively console quality, the GameStick is focusing more on portability and the ability to take your Android games anywhere? provided you have access to a television.

At the PlayJam booth, they were showing off both the developer kit (grey) and consumer versions of the GameStick (white)

Successfully funded on Kickstarter in early February, GameStick hit way above their $100,000 goal, raising a whopping $647,000. The GameStick is about the size of a stick of gum, essentially an HDMI stick that nestles itself snugly inside it?s own dual-analog controller for easy transport. When it comes to specs (Android peoples are all about those nowadays), the GameStick features a dual-core Amlogic 8726-MX A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, and runs on Android Jelly Bean. Like the OUYA, this means it should be relatively easy for Android developers to port their games over to the console (which uses a separate marketplace than the Play Store). This will no doubt be the GameStick?s biggest hurdle as you?re only as good as the games you offer.

We?ve been spending the last few days in San Francisco here at GDC 2013 and ran into the boys at PlayJam who were nice enough to give us a tour of their micro-console, along with some of the GameStick?s user interface. I can?t say I was expecting much out of the GameStick?s paltry dual-core CPU even though 1GB of RAM would be more than adequate for gaming (you?re not going to be doing a lot of multi-tasking on a gaming system). As it turns out, I was wrong. Well, the first part anyway. The GameStick?s UI was silky smooth, games opened up nice and quick, and best of all, they were all running in HD. If you?d like to go on a fantastic voyage, check out the GameStick for yourself in our hands-on video:

The GameStick is currently looking towards an April launch and in a press release, has successfully nabbed funding from GameStick (along with support from both Android and iOS games developers like Madfinger Games among others. You?ll be able to nab your own for $79 and for $20 more, there will be a handy dock that, not only opens up the number of ports on the GameStick, but also wirelessly charges 1 controller by simply resting on top. Keep in mind the only working GameStick was the developer kit, while the white consumer version wasn?t an actual working model.

NERF Strongarm Elite Blaster

by Edwin - on March 28th, 2013

We did take a look at a NERF shooter yesterday, but that did not really come with the kind of sustaining firepower as it holds only 3 darts in its ammo reserves. The thing is, the NERF Triad Elite has an advantage of an extremely long range ? we?re talking about being able to shoot up to 75 feet here, people! Well, for those who want something meatier, then you can settle for the $16.99 NERF Strongarm Elite Blaster, which also comes with a shooting range of up to 75 feet, and it will be able to splatter your target (if you are a good shot) with all 6 darts in rapid succession if the situation calls for it.

Of course, the asking price is also higher than the Triad Elite, but that is to be expected when you get a higher level of performance in turn. You can more or less say that the NERF Strongarm Elite Blaster is in the Elite line, where all of the darts and the internal firing mechanisms have been specially configured to achieve the 75 feet range, which is more or less double what most regular NERF products out there are capable of. The tactical rail itself has also been moved to the gun body, making it the sidearm of choice when you want to dominate the office.

iPhone 5S Release Date in June: Finally, A Credible Rumor

Apple hasn?t announced an iPhone 5S release date in June, but according to the latest rumor, a well connected Applemanufactureris planning for a June iPhone 5S launch and release soon after.

The iPhone 5S is rumored as the next iPhone to launch, and a new rumor claims Apple will announce the iPhone 5S in June. The leak focuses on a June launch, but the manufacturer is also claiming a June iPhone 5S release that their product will match up with.

This would mean a June launch date and a release soon after, which could put the iPhone 5S back on stage at WWDC.

This is the second iPhone 5S announcement rumor for June, but the first that comes from a trustworthy source. The original claim of theiPhone5S launch in June included the iPad 5 as part of an event with the tagline, ?Original Passion, New Ideas? which is not a typical Apple tagline, nor is theSaturdayevent a typical Apple timing.

iPhone 5S release rumors come from a company working on Qi wireless charging.

iPhone 5S release rumors come from a company working on Qi wireless charging.

A new rumor comes from TechCrunch, where John Biggs reports that at least one very well connected manufacturer is planning for a June iPhone 5S launch.

According to the report, a confidential presentation shows the product plans of this company which points to a ?firm June 2013 launch,? of the iPhone 5S.

Apple leaks for iPhone launches are nothing new, and right now there are conflicting leaks that place the iPhone 5S release and launch in June, July, August and pretty much anytime in Q3 2013. Many times manufacturers listen to these same rumors for an inside track on upcoming launches, with a hope of releasing accessories at release.

This rumor is different, according to TechCrunch, because the manufacturer is very well connected. Unlike the unknown manufacturers who cranked out the wrong Samsung Galaxy S4 cases earlier this year, the company tied to a the June iPhone 5S launch rumor boasts the following qualifications.

  • Is an Apple Certified Manufacturer
  • Claiming cooperation with Foxconn for a ?synchronization? with a June iPhone 5S release.

The company is reportedly a certified manufacturer which means it is able to make Lightning accessories. TechCrunch calls out Qi certified wireless chargers and dongles for the iPhone 5. These could also be the first iPhone 5S accessories on the market if the company can synchronise their launch with the iPhone 5S.

Current iPhone 5S rumors point to an iPhone that looks similar to the iPhone 5, with a new processor and a new camera. Most rumors point to a built-in fingerprint reader in the home button, but oneanalystbelievesthis won?t arrive until the iPhone 6.

Even with such a connected manufacturer, we can?t be sure that Apple is planning an iPhone 5S release in June, until invites go out.

Google Play Movies and TV update brings info cards

Google has upgraded its Play Movies and TV app to bring info cards for select movies and TV shows. Users can pause the program and get information on actors, songs, directors, related films and more. I?m sure I?m not the only one to whip out my phone in the middle of a movie or TV show to check IMDB and get said information, so having that sort of stuff built into the app is a killer feature for many people.

Other changes in today?s update include the ability to search across your own library and the Google Play Store at the same time, the ability to receive notifications for new episodes of TV shows you?ve bought, a new refresh button in the overflow menu, and availability in India. Get over to the Google Play Store and hit the download button to get all of these features.

MiiPC is a spanking new Kickstarter project

by Edwin - on March 27th, 2013

Another day, another interesting idea arrives on crowdsourcing website Kickstarter, and we have the MiiPC this time around. No, do not be mistaken that this could very well be some sort of computer that was developed by the folks over at Nintendo, after all, with the word ?Mii? in it, some folks could be fooled into thinking that way. The MiiPC was launched by Young Song , the founder of eMachines. Young hopes to be a positive yet disruptive force in the traditional PC market by rolling out the first family computer that is based on the Android platform, although he requires the help of Kickstarter and its backers to get the job done.

The MiiPC has been priced from $89 as part of a Kickstarter early bird discount, and just in case you were wondering what the MiiPC is able to do, it enables parents to give their little ones access to the Internet, all the while ensuring that these very kids of theirs will remain under supervision using a companion mobile app. Safe surfing of the Internet, so to speak, which would definitely result in peace of mind for parents who fret more than the others. You cannot attach a price tag to peace of mind, can you? At least, even if your child learned something undesirable from the Internet when they are not under your watch, you know you have done your best.

The MiiPC will arrive with a HDMI connection, allowing it to be connected to computer monitors as well as the majority of modern TVs out there in the market. Apart from that, a couple of USB ports would optimize the entire experience, delivering a true keyboard and mouse experience. With access to the MiiPC companion mobile app round the clock, you will be able to enjoy complete peace of mind as you monitor your kids? real-time activities regardless of where you are, as long as you remain connected to the Internet, of course. MiiPC will run on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice.

Our friends at Subatomic Studios have just announced that the wildly popular Fieldrunners would finally be getting a sequel. ? Pint sized invaders seeking revenge!

? A tower that launches bee hives!

? Tons of levels in a 20+ hour campaign!

? Revolutionary AI ? each enemy creates a dynamic, realistic path through the battlefield!

? Gorgeous, hand painted, 2D graphics by award winning artists!

? 20 unique, upgradeable weapons!

Head to this link if you want to try it before it officially lands. Once you?ve applied, Subatomic says you can expect to get everything you need to get started within a few days. We?re not sure how much the full game is supposed to cost just yet, but the iPhone and iPod Touch versions cost $.99, while the iPad version is a whopping $5.

I should note that companies sometimes price differently depending on platform ? for instance, much of Rovio?s stuff was free coming over to Android while iOS users had to pay up. We?re not saying the same will happen here, but keep it in mind before you start writing it off. Read on for full press details.

How to prevent your child from making in-app purchases on your iPad

in-app-purchases-6

Every day, I see stories about some person contacting the media to complain Apple wouldn?t reimburse them for in-app purchases their kids made on an iPad. You see people complaining about charges of a couple hundred dollars to well over $1000 made in a 10 minute period. The latest story I?ve been seeing is about a British policeman who actually reported his own 13-year old son for fraud for running up a3,700 (about $5614) bill on his iPad. See The Inquisitr?s website for the full story. In the story,Doug Crossan claims his son didn?t understand he was making purchases, and he thinks Apple should forgive this huge bill. Since Apple refused, Crossan reported his kid for fraud, not because he wants to get his child in legal hot water, but because he wants to ?embarrass Apple as much as possible?, as quoted by The Inquisitr.

Apple has forgiven charges in the past, but those were mostly made in a short time frame by very young kids who probably didn?t understand they were giving Apple their parents? real money in exchange for some game coins or pretend food to feed the pretend animals. I think a 13-year old kid certainly has some concept of money, how to use it to purchase things, and how hard his parents worked to earn that money. And apparently his charges accrued over time and from multiple games, which indicates to me that the kid often had unattended access to the iPad. I think the fault for running up this bill lies firmly with the father for not utilizing the safeguards that Apple has installed in iOS to prevent ?accidentally? running up charges. Do I think Apple could make it easier to set these limits ? yes. But I also think you should use some common sense before handing over an iPad to a kid. Everything you need to prevent unauthorized charges can be found in the Settings app on your iPad (or iPhone).

in-app-purchases-1in-app-purchases-2My daughter has an iPad of her own. Before I gave it to her, I enabled restrictions on it to prevent her from making purchases on her iPad. I did this because she wants to benefit from the riches of my iTunes account ? thousands of songs bought over the years, hundreds of apps ? all purchased by me. She doesn?t know the password required to change these restrictions, and she doesn?t know the password to the family iTunes account, either. If she had her own personal iTunes account, I wouldn?t have been so quick to put restrictions on her iPad, but I bought the iPad for her and I buy the content, so I get to control it. And my daughter is 17 years old. She?s still a minor, unable to enter into a binding legal contract with Apple, so I?m stuck holding the legal and financial reins. I expect to pay thousands (and thousands) for her college education ? not for a few hours of game time.

in-app-purchases-7By the way, you?ll need to set a password for restrictions. You?ll create one when you first enable restrictions, and you?ll need to enter it every time you want to enter the restrictions option. Be sure you don?t use the same password for the restrictions options that you use for your iPad?s general password, because your kid or other users may know that one.

in-app-purchases-3All these disputed in-app charges seem to stem from games that are free to download, but have restricted play unless you purchase add-ons from within the app itself. Years ago, after I heard the first story about some kid racking up a big bill, I remember Apple forgave those charges and implemented some restrictions that would prevent similar charges in the future. Before the first problems were reported, you had free access to the iTunes stores for fifteen minutes before you?d be asked to enter your password again. This caused problems for some parents who would download a game and then hand the iPad to a kid. The kid had fourteen minutes or so to buy as many things within a game as he could tap on before he?d need to enter a password.

Now you can use the iPad?s Restrictions options in the Settings app to require a password immediately, or every time a purchase is made, in other words. Having set it to immediately may be a pain when you?re making purchases, but it can prevent your kid, or other unauthorized purchaser, from buying anything from any of the iTunes stores ? apps, music, movies, etc ? without knowing the password. To be extra safe, you can even prevent in-app purchases at all.

That some games have in-app purchases is easily determined. You?ll see in the lead photo a list of the popular in-app purchases and their prices for the Toon Shooters game. I found this list of prices by scrolling down in the details listing for the game. (I?m not picking on the Toon Shooters game; it was just the first free app I noticed on the Featured page in the App Store that looked like it was suitable for younger kids.)

in-app-purchases-4Granted, little kids may not understand the in-app purchase screen for the Toon Shooters app. He may not understand that buying some permanent pets will cost $6 real dollars, but I think a 13-year old kid would understand this.

in-app-purchases-5If you?ve left the restriction setting to allow 15 minutes before re-entering the password, incurring a charge is as simple as tapping one of the on-screen buttons. If you require a password for each and every purchase, the kid will be stopped by the need to enter the password ? unless you?ve given him the iTunes password. If you?ve given the kid the password, you?ve in effect told him he?s free to purchase anything he wants with your money.

in-app-purchases-8If you?ve taken the extra step to block in-app purchases, the kid can still see the screen full of goodies, but he won?t be able to purchase anything. He can tap on the buttons, but he?ll see the message shown above.

These restrictions can be a pain for parents who share their iPad with their kids. You?ll have to go into the Restrictions option in the Settings app to turn back on in-app purchases if you want to make one, but I think it?s better than finding out the hard way that your kid has been spending cash like there?s no tomorrow.

I think Apple could make it easier to control what users can and can?t do. If they see iPads as the successor to computers, they need to allow for some of the same features that computers offer families. With computers, you can create multiple accounts for multiple users. Each account can limit what the user can do. Not every person in a family owns their own computer, and not every person in a family owns their own iPad. Since families may be sharing a single device, perhaps the iPad should allow different passwords for different users, so that your kids can have an account that has only limited apps available to them and lots of restrictions on purchases made against the iTunes account. Older kids could have more access to apps and maybe even more access to the iTunes stores, while younger kids have very limited access to apps and none to the store, and the adults could have full access to everything. The adults would also be the ones who can edit the limits set on the kids? accounts. Or perhaps something akin to the Airplane Mode setting could work. You could set Child Mode with a single swipe before handing the iPad to a kid, so the kid would have no access to the iTunes account, no access to the Settings app, and maybe even limited access to other types of apps. Maybe the Child Mode could limit access to only the apps stored in a single folder, where you could place the games and apps you allow your kid to use.

In any event, Apple has made some restrictions available to prevent your kid from racking up a huge bill on your credit card. They aren?t as fully-featured as they could be, but they are there, and the parent is responsible for the bills the kids run up if they don?t make use of these restrictions. Do you agree?
