Vizio XVT Series Cinemawide LED Smart TV with Theater 3D

by Edwin - on June 29th, 2012

If you are in the market for a widescreen TV, then you might want to hold your horses off from the next big name purchase from a more established brand name from Europe or Japan, but look towards one of the more recent newcomers to the scene ? which would be Vizio. Just what does Vizio has in mind for the masses this time around? We are talking about the Vizio XVT Series Cinemawide LED Smart TV with Theater 3D that is their first 21:9 ultra-widescreen TV which has been available in the US.

Basically, this groundbreaking TV enables movie buffs to experience the latest Hollywood blockbusters without being distracted by the now all pervasive black bars that are located at both top and bottom of the picture. I suppose some of us are now even too used to it that we do not notice both black bars any more, but then again, with the Vizio XVT Series Cinemawide LED Smart TV with Theater 3D doing away with those black bars, you are might just be blown away by what you see.

The 21:9 Cinemawide screen that comes with this LED TV is definitely wider compared to the standard 16:9 screen which is what the majority of HDTVs out there offer, making it accommodate perfectly the 2.35:1 aspect ratio that is used for most major Hollywood films. In other words, there would not be any more black bars left to view. Not only that, a resolution count of 2560 x 1080p alongside Edge Lit Razor LED technology ensures you enjoy breathtaking HD at a higher resolution compared to standard issue 1920 x 1080 resolution. There is also a Smart Dimming feature that paves the way for a brilliant picture with outstanding contrast and detail, not to mention the integration of SRS StudioSound HD that makes this TV?s rich surround sound as immersive as the picture.

The XVT Series Cinemawide HDTV will also come with Vizio?s award-winning Theater 3D technology, delivering flicker-free 3D which is clear, crisp and up to two times brighter compared to conventional 3DTVs, letting you enjoy a vibrant cinema-quality 3D experience. There are also Vizio Internet Apps to keep you occupied, where this key component ensures you get to enjoy endless entertainment options courtesy of thousands of streaming movies, TV shows, and songs that are pulled straight from the Internet.

The asking price? We are looking at $2,799 for each purchase, although for a limited time only, it will be released at an introductory price point of $2,499.

by Janet Cloninger on June 29, 20120 comments

in Geek Toys, News

Last year, we told you about a DIY hologram kit that came with everything you needed to make your own hologram. That kit came with a hologram-quality laser diode, Litiholo RRT20 holographic film that requires no chemicals and no development process, laser-cut laser mount, and laser plate mount, but you could only make red holograms with it. Now, Litiholo has turned to Kickstarter to fund a new version of this kit that allows you to make full-color holograms. The DIY Full-Color Hologram Kit from Litiholo will add green and blue lasers, and will contain enough film to make 20 holograms. A minimum early-bird pledge of $185 is required to earn one of these new kits; after those are gone, a pledge of $235 is required for the new kit. There are still 27 days in the funding period, so you have time to act if you?d like to make holograms in your own home or classroom.

RIM Delays BlackBerry 10 Until 2013, Lays Off 5,000 Staff

RIM Delays BlackBerry 10 Until 2013, Lays Off 5,000 Staff

RIM?s new mobile OS was supposed to launch before the end of the year, and now RIM has announced that they are delaying the launch of BlackBerry 10 until 2013.

RIM announced its latest financial results with a net financial loss of $192 million in the last quarter, they have decided to lay off 5,000 staff as well as delaying the launch of BlackBerry 10.

RIM BlackBerry

?RIM?s development teams are relentlessly focussed on ensuring the quality and reliability of the platform and I will not compromise the product by delivering it before it is ready. I am confident that the first BlackBerry 10 smartphones will provide a ground-breaking next generation smartphone user experience,? said Thorsten Heins, President and CEO. ?We are encouraged by the traction that the BlackBerry 10 platform is gaining with application developers and content partners following the successful BlackBerry Jam sessions that we have held around the world since the beginning of May. Similarly, the reception of the BlackBerry 10 platform by our key carrier partners has been very positive and they are looking forward to going to market with BlackBerry 10 smartphones in the first quarter of calendar 2013.?

RIM obviously want to make sure that their BlackBerry 10 OS is ready before it is launched, so we guess we will have to wait until next year to seethe first BlackBerry 10 devices.

Add Filters to Canon, Fuji, or Olympus Cameras with a Lensmate Adapter

by Ian Lim on June 28, 20120 comments

in Digital Cameras and Gear, News

In 2002 I purchased a Canon G2, considered at the time to be one of the best prosumer cameras around. At the time the camera cost me around $1200AU, and as an optional extra, Canon offered a lens surround which would allow you to run filters on it. Not only was it expensive, but it was made from cheap black plastic that didn?t even match the champagne camera. After much research I found Lensmate, a small niche company that was making CNC machined aluminum versions that not only matched the colour, but looked a heck of a lot classier.

Well I?m glad to say that Lensmate is still in business. Currently they support accessories for the Canon G1X, SX series, latestG series (successorsto my old G2) and S series, Fuji X10/X100 or Olympus XZ-1. So if you own one of the above cameras and you?ve been considering a filter adapter for running a CPL, close up kit, or even quick change filter systems, then it might well be worth a visit.

Everything You Need to Know About Verizon Share Everything Plans

Verizon?s new Share Everything plans are now available for new and existing customers. The Verizon Share Data plans shift the focus from a shared pool of minutes to a shared pool of data.

Verizon is the first major carrier to roll out shared data plans, but AT&T is reportedly working on a similar offering that may launch later this year.

The Verizon Share Everything plan offers an attractive set of features and prices, but it isn?t the best plan for every user. Check out our guide to Verizon Share Everything Plans to learn what?s new and how to figure out if the switch is right for you.

What?s New?

The new Share Everything plan offers a number of changes to the traditional cell phone plan, focusing on shared data and unlimited minutes. The new plans allow families to share data with up to 10 devices, the old cap was 5 devices.

The video below shows many of the new Share Everything plan features.

Verizon Share Everything Plan Features:

  • Unlimited Voice
  • Unlimited Messaging
  • Shared Data Plans
  • Mobile Hotspot Included
  • Tablets and hotspots share data

If you have multiple smartphones, and rely on Mobile hotspot features, the new plans will offer the most savings.

Verizon Share Everything Data Plan Prices

The new plan pricing can be a bit tough to understand after all the attention Verizon and carriers have placed on minutes and messages over the years.

Base price for each line is as follows.

  • Smartphones are $40
  • Flip phones are $30
  • Tablets including the iPad are $10
  • MiFi, USB Modem and Netbooks are $20

The big difference is the size of the data plan. While there is no unlimited option, this data is shared among all devices.

  • 1GB ? $50
  • 2GB ? $60
  • 4GB ? $70
  • 6GB ? $80
  • 8GB ? $90
  • 10GB ? $100
  • 12GB ? $110
  • 14GB ? $120
  • 16GB ? $130
  • 18GB ? $140
  • 20GB ? $150
  • Overage is billed at $15 per 1GB.

The data fee is charged once per plan, instead of once per device like the data plans used to be charged. This is where families with many smartphones will see the biggest savings.

There is no contract extension to upgrade to the new Share Everything plans. Once you upgrade to the new plan there is no going back to the old style plans.

Not Forced to Upgrade

Upgrading to the new Share Everything is not mandatory, and while Verizon hopes it is an easy way to take the unlimited data plans away from many users, plans users will lose the next time they upgrade to a phone at a discounted rate.

Users who choose to upgrade to the Share Everything plans will see the following warning;

You currently have an Unlimited Data package on one or more lines on your account. The Unlimited Data package is no longer available. To continue, please select a new Data Option for all of the lines on your plan. You will not be able to go back to your current Unlimited Data package

Read:Data is Not Data is Not Data on Verizon?s New Shared Data Plans

These users should stick with the current plans and budget for buying a new phone at full retail to keep the unlimited data plans long-term.

Save Money

The new plans offer a big opportunity for savings, but not every customer will see the savings.

Verizon offers a Share Everything calculator to help users see what their cell phone bill will be on the new plan. Existing Verizon customers can start the switch to Share Everything plans and compare the plan with their current bill at Verizon Wireless. The compare option includes any existing discounts.

Currently my family plan will be about the same on the new Share Everything plan, though all of our phones will now come with unlimited minutes, messaging and mobile hotspot feature.

The real savings are found when I factor in the cost of upgrading our last flip phone to a smartphone, which was on the way in July. The new Share Everything plans allow us to add this smartphone without adding another $30 data plan, saving an extra $20 a month ($30 data plan ? $10 line charge).

Verizon Shared Data Mobile Hotspot IncludedBecause 3 of the 5 smartphones on our plan use very little data we will be able to share a 4GB or 6GB data plan between the 5 lines, to keep savings down further, all without the need to worry about minutes used. Verizon offers an easy way to view usage details for current customers, but the usage details are not available for all accounts at this time.

The added minutes and ability to use our phones as mobile hotspots dramatically increase the value of these plans for my family, even if they don?t represent a further reduction in our monthly phone bill.

Are you switching over to the new Share Everything plans? If so how much will you save?

Home Cellulite Smoother

by Edwin - on June 28th, 2012

I don?t know about you, but the general rule of thumb is this ? ladies seem to take more pride in their physical looks than us men. We?re more utilitarian, wearing whatever we can grab at the moment before heading out for a social event without thinking too much about whether our turtleneck and jeans are suitable or not. The ladies? They?ve practically got an entire thesis down pat on what to wear for a particular event. Well, one thing?s for sure ? they are also more concerned about the scourge known as cellulite, especially around the thigh area. This is where the $1,500 Home Cellulite Smoother comes into play, although I am not quite sure whether it is worth your time (and especially money) in checking it out.

How do you verify the effectiveness of a device like this? It is said to be able to smoothen and tighten dimpled skin caused by cellulite in a safe and painless manner. Taking over 20 years of engineering research, the Home Cellulite Smoother was developed in France, and sports motorized rollers that rely on gentle suction and massaging pulsations in order to stimulate fat metabolism. Each purchase comes with five treatment heads, cleaning wipes, and 20 replacement filters to get you started right out of the box.

Google By the Numbers: Android, Google Play, Google+

Today at their Google I/O 2012 Event for developers, Google announced somesignificantnumbers.

Hugo Berra of Google took the stage and bragged that the company?s Android device activations grew a lot over the last two years. Compared with 400,000 activations of Android smartphones and tablets by this time in 2011 and 1 Million devices in 2012, they reached the 400 Million activations mark already in 2012.

Google now activates 400,000 Android devices a day.

?That?s about 12 new Android devices every second of every day,? Berra stated.

In 2011 they activated 400,000 devices each day. Today Google activates about 1 Million devices per day.

We can all agree that?s a huge number, but one must wonder if this gets a little bloated because of the number of hard-core users who keep flashing their phones and tablets with new ROMs causing a ?new activation? each time they do. Even if you factor this phenomena into the numbers, Google can understandably brag about these numbers.

If you compare their numbers to Apple?s recent announcement, you see that Apple announced that they recorded 400 Million useraccountsin 2012. Considering the reactivation situation mentioned above, you?d have to say that Apple still has an edge on Google.

Google also announced that the Google Play Store reached the 600,000 app mark. In addition, they said that users downloaded and installed 20 Billion apps in total.

Again, by comparison, Apple claims to host 650,000 apps with 250,000 designed for the iPad. Google didn?t break down how many of their apps were made for tablets.

The company also broke down the stats for its Google+ social networking service. In just over a year, 250 million people have upgraded to Google+. Of those 250 million people, Google says that there are 150 million people active on the service. Of those, 50% sign in to their accounts daily and spend 60 minutes or more logged into their account.

Google says that a majority of Google+ users are using the service from mobile rather than from desktop and the company announced a new Google+ app for tablets, the iPad included, in response.

Huawei Ascend D Quad Release Delayed

The Huawei Ascend D Quad, the Chinese company?s upcoming quad-core smartphone, has hit a manufacturing snag and production will be delayed until sometime during the fall of 2012.

According to CNMO, by way of UnwiredView, Huawei has confirmed the delay saying that the reason is because of technical issues that have developed with the company?s new quad-core chip. The company is hard at work in an attempt to remedy the situation but expects that issues will set back the production of the Ascend D Quad until August at the earliest.

That means that the device might not hit shelves until September. The Huawei Ascend D Quad was originally announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona during the month of February.

This isn?t good news for the company that is trying to establish a name for itself in the Android world. The Huawei Ascend D Quad boasted some of the most impressive specifications at MWC 2012 but it likely won?t once the fall rolls around. Going up against the Samsung Galaxy S III and then, Apple?s iPhone 5, might be insurmountable for the device.

That?s unfortunate as we came away impressed by the smartphone at CTIA 2012 where we spent some hands-on time with it.

Our hands-on video can be seen below.

The Ascend D Quad sports a 1.5 GHz Huawei quad-core processor which we found to be extremely snappy. It also handled Android 4.0 very well. It includes a large 4.5-inch HD display that offers 720p resolution, a rear 8MP camera that Huawei touts as ?best in class?, and a large 2,500 mAh battery that should be able to handle both HSPA+ and 4G LTE quite well.

Its design is also both thin and light. Needless to say, it?s Huawei?s most intriguing device to date but one that the company should have had on shelves earlier this year, not the fall.

We?ll keep those interested in the Huawei Ascend D Quad posted on a release date, once we get closer to production.
