TweetBot Shaming AppCake iPhone Pirates

Thanks toInstallous alternatives like AppCake the iOS 6.1 jailbreak opened up the door to more app piracy, including popular but affordable apps like Tweetbot.

A new effort from Tweetbot doesn?t cut pirates off, but it does suggest they tweet about their piracy, and based on our Twitter search many of the app pirates are sharing their pirating ways

Read: Best Cydia Apps

Gizmodo UK discovered the tweets earlier this week, calling attention to the app pirates who are taking up Tweetbot tokens on Twitter, which could otherwise go to paying users.

Installous alternatives like AppCake allow piracy on the iPhone, and Tweetbot is trying to shame pirates.

Installous alternatives like AppCake allow piracy on the iPhone, and Tweetbot is trying to shame pirates.

The tweet says,

I?ve been demoing a pirated copy of @tweetbot and really like it so I?m going to buy a copy!

While most of the jailbreak community uses the jailbreak as a way to customize the iPhone in ways Apple will not allow, some members view it as the fastest road to app piracy.

As we shared previously, Installous is dead, but app piracy on the iPhone is not. We?ve heard of users moving to Installous alternatives like AppCake which let users download paid apps without paying, often under the guise of a trail.

A Twitter search reveals many users sharing apps from AppCake, and even users complaining about the fact that they need to leave AppCake open while they steal apps.Hackulous, which used to run Installous, may have left the business of helping pirates, but it continues to tell people how to pirate apps.

While we occasionally hear from creators who don?t mind that their products are pirated, developers pour obscene amounts of time and energy into creating apps. Apps which sell for a few dollars, and which users who own devices costing hundreds should be capable of paying for.

It may not be able to shoulder the world, but the ATLAS iPhone 5 Case can protect your iPhone 5

Incipio-Altas iPhone 5Case-1

There are many iPhone 5 cases on the market. There are fewer extreme iPhone 5 cases. There is only one extreme iPhone 5 case that gives a warranty not only for the case but also for your iPhone 5 for one year, and that case is the ATLAS iPhone 5 Case from Incipio. The ATLAS iPhone 5 Case is a two-piece case that is waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, and ultra rugged. The case also has a built-in tempered glass screen protector to protect your iPhone?s screen. When you buy this case, you get a one year warranty against accidental water damage caused by failure of the case. This case debuted at the 2013 CES show in January, and at that time it was slated to be released in February. Incipio?s web site has very little information on the ATLAS case, but a search of the web produced videos and reports about the case from the 2013 CES show. Early information hints that the price of the ATLAS iPhone 5 Case will cost about $90.00.

The Luci Inflatable Solar Lantern will be powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery which can also be juiced up via its super-efficient solar panels. It is said that even any incandescent light is good enough to charge it up, although the sun?s natural rays will work best. Thanks to the ?Buy One, Give One? program, if you decide to pick up a Luci Inflatable Solar Lantern, the good people over at MPowerd have pledged to do the same, sending one to someone else in a developing country.

Ubuntu Touch builds will soon be available for more than 20 Android devices

When Canonical originally announced Ubuntu Touch, we were surprised to learn that the new Linux-based mobile operating system could be built to run on current Nexus devices. Those with the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 would be able to get this thing up and running as long as they had an unlocked bootloader. As exciting as that was, that list of devices didn?t account for much of the Android ecosystem.

Well, a few more of you will be able to build the source for your devices soon as Canonical has confirmed more than 20 new devices would be added to the list. These devices include the Motorola XOOM, CDMA Galaxy Nexus devices, the Nexus S and Nexus One, the HTC One X and One X+, the Samsung Galaxy Note, Note 2, and S3 (Verizon, AT&T, and international GSM variants), the Galaxy S2, Galaxy Tab 10.1 WiFi, Motorola?s DROID 3, DROID 4 and DROID Bionic, the ASUS Transformer Pad and Transformer Infinity, LG Optimus 4X HD, and more.

Typical users probably won?t benefit from this news unless a developer decides to turn them into flashable ROMs, but its main goal is to give developers a chance to develop and test apps for the platform ahead of its launch. You can find the full list of devices at the wiki here, which is sorted to show you which devices Ubuntu is running fine on, which devices are considered a work-in-progress and which devices are deemed ?sort-of working,? as well as links to everything you need for your particular device (if available). We?ll be tracking Canonical down at Mobile World Congress to get a close look at Ubuntu Touch for ourselves, so stay tuned for continued coverage!

Samsung And Apple World Smartphone Market Ahold

Samsung And Apple World Smartphone Market Ahold ? Two of the company?s smartphones, Apple and Samsung, still seems to be the company that dominates the smartphone market of the world. And chances are, the trend still will continue for the next few years. This is expressed by the market research institute Gartner. They revealed that Samsung and Apple controls a total of 46.5 percent of the sales of the smartphone world. And, if the prosentasi is expressed in numbers, Samsung managed to sell as many as 55 million units of smartphones, while Apple has marketed the 23.6 million iPhones.

In addition to the two companies, other smartphone manufacturers are absolutely not able to interfere with the dominance of the two companies. Research in Motion (RIM), Nokia mobile phone or other Android manufacturers are still not able to interfere with the consistency of Apple and Samsung.

However, the Gartner note, Samsung is experiencing an increase in sales in the third quarter in the year 2012. For the Android platform, Samsung managed to overwhelm the market with percentage amounted to 45.0 percent, an increase of 52.5 percent in the previous quarter. While at the same time, Appel decreased by 13.9 percent.

iPhone 5S Release Date & Rumor Roundup

The iPhone 5S rumors started late last yearand as we roll into 2013, the iPhone 5S rumors are picking up steam andbeginningto agree on release date timing, features and what the iPhone 5S will look like.

All of these iPhone 5S rumors help paint a picture of what Apple is planning for the iPhone 5S release and likely right along side it iOS 7, a new version of the iPhone software.

Apple is obviously working on the next iPhone, and based on thecompany?spast actions and naming schemes it is verylikelythat the iPhone 5Swill arrive this year.

We?ve heard quite a few iPhone 5S rumors so far, mixed in with rumors of an iPhone 6 with a massive 5-inch display and rumors of a cheap iPhone for developing countries. While the iPhone 6 mayindeedfeature a larger screen it would b surprising to see it launch in 2013. The cheaper iPhone may indeed launch later this year, but it will likely go on sale in emerging markets, not at Verizon and AT&T.

Apple faces a stronger competitor this year with Samsung launching the Galaxy S4 in March. The Galaxy S4 is launching on the success of the Galaxy S3, and could pack enough punch to take on not only the iPhone 5, but also all the newiPhone5S features.

iPhone 5S rumors

iPhone 5S rumors point to color options and a similar design. Image via Martin Hajek

The first iPhone 5S rumor arrived just days ahead of the iPhone 5 announcement, pointing to an iPhone 5S with a focus on security, and soon after we began hearing rumors of an early 2013 iPhone 5S release date and suggestions that Apple would launch the iPhone 5S and the iPad 5 at the same event.

From big rumors to small rumors and iOS 7 features we hope Apple adds to the iPhone 5S, there is no shortage of iPhone 5S rumors. For shoppers who are waiting to buy the iPhone 5S, rumors offer a glimpse at what might make it to the store shelves later this year.

Here, we are taking a look at what analysts and leaks are saying about the iPhone 5S, as well as what Apple?s own patents and industry insiders hint at for the iPhone 5S.

iPhone 5s Release Date

The iPhone 5S release date remains up in the air, though the early rumors of an iPhone 5S release early in 2013 don?t look good anymore. While Apple has traditionally held an event in the Spring to announce new products, the iPhone is announcement has taken place in summer and fall.

Apple avoids announcing products at major trade shows like CES and Mobile World Congress, preferring to invite the press to events in or near the Cupertino, Calif. headquarters when the company is ready to show off a new product. Occasionally Apple will send invites to an event the day of, or the day before a competitor?s launch. If Apple is planning to hold a Spring event for any product, we could see invites come out on March 14th, when Samsung plans to announce the Galaxy S4, which will likely be the iPhone 5S? largest rival.

A summer iPhone 5S release date is rumored.

A summer iPhone 5S release date is rumored. Image via MacRumros

Summer 2013 keeps coming up as the rumored iPhone 5S release date. Apple previously released the iPhone models in June or July at their WWDC events, changing the focus in 2011 to launch the iPhone 4S in October. It is possible that Apple will switch back to a summer iPhone 5S release, especially withKGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is known for hisopinionson Apple releases and products, on board with a Summer iPhone 5S release.

Read: Is it Too Soon To Wait for the iPhone 5S Release

If Apple does plan to release the iPhone 5S in the summer we can expect to start seeing iOS 7 betas for developers, which will allow them to integrate new features. In the last two years Apple announced a new version of iOS in the summer with a fall launch. Apple could keep iOS 7 a secret until the event or it could use a Spring event to show off iOS 7 and potential new iOS 7 features. There are too many moving parts to be definitive about Apple?s IOS 7 plans, even based on past actions.

One thing is certain, Apple?s iPhone 5S announcement will include the iPhone 5S release date and carrier announcements, somethingcompetitorslike HTC still struggle to do.

iPhone 5S Display

The iPhone 5S will almost certainly keep the same 4-inch display size as the iPhone 5, and will likely use the same 1136 x 640 resolution.

While this is smaller in size and resolution than competitors who are offering up nearly 5-inch displays with 1080P full HD screens, Tim Cook stated that Apple is happy withtheirscreen size choice during an earnings call earlier this year.

The iPhone 5 offers as you know a new 4-inch Retina display, which is the most advanced display in the industry and no one comes close to matching the level of quality as the Retina display. It also provides a larger screen size for iPhone customers without sacrificing the one headed ease-of-use that our customers love. So, we put a lot of thinking into screen size and believe we?ve picked the right one.

Even if Apple keeps the same size 4-inch display thecompanycould choose to use a new Sharp IGZO display for the iPhone 5S. The video below shows the a phone using a Sharp IGZO display panel at CES 2013.

In the video below Sharp explains the advantages of an IGZO display. The biggest benefits are a better touch experience and better battery life.

iPhone 5S Design & Features

Apple will likely release an iPhone 5S that looks very much like the iPhone 5. Not only is this how Apple has handled past ?S? model phone launches, but analysts are already claiming Apple plans to keep the design much the same.

Earlier this monthMorgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty stated that the iPhone 5S design will not likely change from the iPhone 5. Huberty bases these claims on lower Apple equipment costs.

iPhone 5S back

Rumored back of the iPhone 5S vs iPhone 5.

A leaked photo allegedly shows the back of the iPhone 5S. The photo below from eTradeSupply and MacRumorsshows the iPhone 5 back next to an alleged iPhone 5S back. There are a few key differences, such as the placement of the logic board screws.

Read: How Apple Could Launch the iPhone 5S and a Larger iPhone

We?ve previously heard of iPhone 5S color options like the iPod touch line, but rumor is less likely than those proclaiming the same iPhone 5 design.

iPhone 5S back claimed

Reportedly the back of an iPhone 5S

The iPhone 5S willikelyuse a Broadcom 43342 combo chip in the iPhone 5S, according to Evercore Partners analyst Patrick Wang. This chip is a expected to be ready for production in in mid-2013 with a spike in demand in Q3, when the iPhone 5S may launch. The Broadcom chip does not include NFC, like some other recent Broadcom chips, which could mean Apple is once again leaving the feature off.

One of the most likely rumors is that Apple may include a fingerprint reader as part of the iPhone 5S. We?ve heard from numerous analysts and sources that Apple is planning to put a fingerprint reader in the iPhone 5S based on technology from the company?s AuthenTec purchase. Additionally, Apple patents tell us the ?S? in iPhone 5S is for security.

iPhone 5S Camera

We expect Apple will include a better camera in the iPhone 5S. Apple hasimprovedthe iPhone camera on each release and iLounge claims Apple is planning a better camera.

Specifically the iPhone 5S may feature the same 13MP sensor as the Sony Xperia Z and the sensor rumored for the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Read: 5 Best iPhone 5S Rumors So Far

This would deliver better looking photos and HDR video, like that shown in the video clip below.

There are no iPhone 5S sample photos yet, but this gallery of Sony Xperia Z photos may show what the iPhone 5S camera can do. There is certainly more to a camera than the sensor, but it plays a large part in the overall quality.

iPhone 5S Specs

iPhone 5S SpecsThe iPhone 5S specs rumors are few and far between, though odds are Apple is planning a faster processor. A fake photos showed an Apple A7 processor on what was claimed as an iPhone 5S logic board, but aside from that there is not much to go on. Apple routinely upgrades the processor in each new phone, so we could see the Apple A6X like on the iPad 4 or a new Apple A7 processor, only time will tell.

The iPhone 5S may notfeatureNFC, but it could be powered by a new Qualcomm 4G LTE radio chip that would make it easier to use the iPhone 5S across a variety of networks.

Additional rumors point to a 128GB storage option, which is more likely now that Apple offers a 128GB iPad 4.

iPhone 5S Software ? iOS 7

The iPhone 5S will mostlikelylaunch with IOS 7, the next version of Apple?s iPhone software. There are very few leaks about what we can expect from iOS 7. But, there is a good chance that Apple will announce iOS 7 in the next three to four months so that developers have time to work on new features and preparetheirapps.

There are several iOS 7 concepts that show how Apple could improve the iPhone 5S with better Do Not Disturb, a new lock screen and more. The video below shows Auxo, a jailbreak app switcher that we hope Apple implements in iOS 7.

Read: 5 iOS 7 Features Apple Should Buy, Borrow or Steal

We expect to know more about iOS 7 in the coming months. The only thing we know for certain is that iOS 7 will offer a new challenge to the evad3rs iOS jailbreak team.

iPhone 5S Carriers

The iPhone 5S will likely launch on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, just like the iPhone 5. We do expect one new major U.S. carrier to join, as the T-Mobile iPhone is confirmed. While there are noofficialstatementsabout which iPhone T-Mobiel will carry, we expect that Apple is saving theannouncementfor the new iPhone 5S.

Read: iPhone 5S vs.SamsungGalaxy S4 (Rumored)

We could see the iPhone 5S also land on a number of smaller carriers in the U.S. and pre-paid carriers like Straight Talk after a short delay. There is still no Virgin Mobile iPhone 5 in the U.S., so it?s not clear if the iPhone 5S will hit the major pre-paid carrier.

Potential iPhone 5S carriers.

Potential iPhone 5S carriers.

On top of the expected U.S. carriers Apple will likely launch the iPhone 5S on a host of new global carriers at or shortly after release.

iPhone 5S Price

Even with talk of a cheaper iPhone wedon?texpect a bigshakeupintheprice of the iPhone 5S. Apple will likely sell the iPhone 5S for $199 on contract with 16GB of storage and charge $100 more for each jump in storage. The only major change could be the inclusion of an iPhone 5S that retails for $499 on contract with 128GB of storage.

Off contract iPhone 5 pricing, which may be what T-Mobile customers pay, will likely start at $649 and range up to $849.

The iPhone 5 will mostlikelydrop to $99 with a two year contract and the iPhone 4S could drop to free on contract.

Better Rest While Traveling

by Alison - on February 25th, 2013

Ahhhh the joys of travel. Vacation trips are certainly worth the hassle of getting there and back. Work trips ? not so much. Any experienced traveler knows that keeping yourself comfortable and relaxed during the transit process is key. Comfortable clothes help. Maybe you enjoy having your tunes or movies pumping into your ears. If you intend to sleep, prevent the ?35,000 foot head bob? as I like to call it, that boomerang type action that you subconsciously undertake when letting your head relax to one side or another. It is amazing more travelers don?t end up with whiplash when attempting to correct the head bob. Maybe you have a travel pillow ? you know, those C shaped things ? which helps, but the weight of your head still cranes your neck in directions that really can?t be good for us.

Some smart and apparently experienced travelers have a different approach to traveling sleep comfort. Meet The Travel Halo?. Rather than providing a soft place for your head, the focus is on providing head stability. This device contains a small pillow on each side towards the back. These cushions cradle your head, preventing the rolling from side to side. Continue to use the seat headrest for support ? unlike with C pillows which push your head forward. The Travel Halo contains an eye mask too. Pull it down when you really want to block out the world or simply use the headband portion to stabilize your head. Easy to store and super compact, this 2.5 ounce gadget won?t weigh you down either ? key for veteran travelers. If getting rest on a flight, train ride or car ride becomes critical to your daily duties then keep your head in the right position and invest $29 in The Travel Halo. Your head will thank you.

Thanks: Peter Greenberg

First 4G LTE Phones Come To Virgin and Boost Mobile

Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile will soon carry smartphones that take advantage of Sprint?s 4G LTE network: the Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE, HTC One SV and Boost Force.

The Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE is available today on Virgin Mobile, and sells for $299.99 with no contract. The Galaxy Victory 4G LTE has a 4-inch display and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Samsung?s TouchWiz UX. The phone uses a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, has a 5MP rear-facing camera and a 1.3MP front-facing camera.

The Galaxy Victory 4G LTE is a decidedly mid-range phone, but it runs a relatively recent version of Android, and doesn?t require a contract to access 4G LTE data. For just $35 a month users will get unlimited data and messaging with 300 voice minutes. Because the phone is on Virgin Mobile, users can also use Google Wallet.Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE

Boost Mobile will carry two new 4G LTE smartphones on March 7: the Boost Force and HTC One SV.

At $199.99 without a two-year contract, the Boost Force is the cheaper phone of the two. The phone has a 4-inch display, a 5MP rear-facing camera and a 1MP front-facing camera.

The Boost Force run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on a dual-core 1.5GHz processor.

The HTC One SV will cost $299.99 when it comes to Boost Mobile on March 7. The HTC One SV is the same phone that recently came to Cricket Wireless in the U.S. The phone is somewhere between the HTC One S and One V. The One SV features a 4.3-inch 800480 display, and a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon S4 processor.

Like other recent HTC phones, the One SV has an enhanced 5MP camera, Sense 4 and Beats audio for enhanced sound. The HTC One SV runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

None of the new phone on Virgin and Boost Mobile use the latest version of Android, and all are mid-range phones, but these are the first three prepaid phones to use Sprint?s new 4G LTE network.

NYPD Has A Team Dedicated to Finding Stolen iPhones and iPads

The New York Post reports that NYPD has a special team devoted to stolen Apple devices because of rampant theft. Last year iOS device theft could account for the rise of major crimes in New York City, and the NYPD is doing its best to return stolen devices to their owners.

Whenever a user reports an Apple device asstolen, detectives try to obtain tracking numbers from the owner or online records. That number, theInternational Mobile Station Equipment Identity (also known as the IMEI), is then passed along to officers in Police Headquarters. NYPD then shares the IMEI number with Apple.NYPD registers iPhone 5s

Apple can use the IMEI to pinpoint the location of the stolen iPhone. The method even works if the phone is reregistered on another network. That?s because the IMEI is unique to each phone, and doesn?t change when moved to another carrier.

Interested users can find the IMEI on their phone by dialing*#06#. On the iPhone the number will appear on screen before the user can hit ?call.?

After the NYPD tracks down a device it will confiscate the phone and return it to its owner. Police may even confiscate stolen phones after the thief sells the phone to someone else.

The mobile industry will also have a unified database of smartphones and tablets to help track down devices this way by November.

New York Police also recently started a program of registering iPhones in case a thief steals themat any point. The police department had officers at Apple stores to register new iPhones when the iPhone 5 first released. New Yorkers can still register their iPhones or Android phones by going to their local precinct.

In addition to the IMEI users can help police track their iPhones by turning on Find my iPhone. The feature can broadcast the location of the iPhone and gives users some control over the stolen iPhone. With Find my iPhone users can wipe the iPhone, lock it down or send messages to it.

Valve has released Steam for Linux

Steam-for-Linux-1

Hooray! Valve has finally released the popular gaming platform, Steam, for Linux users.Right now it?s only supported under Ubuntu12.04 or 12.10, using the Unity, Gnome or KDE desktop environments. Steams says that more Linux distributions will be fully supported if/when time permits. Perhaps they will include other popular distributions such as LinuxMint (a fork of Ubuntu), Fedora and more. If they only support Ubuntu, maybe they will support a different desktop environment such as the lightweight Xfce.

The Steam installer and Ubuntu desktop are both free to download and install. As a big supporter of free and open source software, hopefully this news will entice more people to give Linux (Ubuntu specifically) a try on their desktops. I can?t wait to try it; give it a go yourselves!

Report: Google Glass to get general consumer release by end of this year (and one user?s take on it from personal experience)

It?s been a good month for Google Glass, it seems. Following seemingly successful rounds of developer workshops (the results of which are being protected under strict non-disclosure agreements), Google confirmed it would be expanding the Glass Explorer program to give lucky (and rich) users a chance to get the device in its early stages for $1,500. While most of us probably won?t be crazy enough to spend that much on it, new information suggests we?ll all have a crack at the device for a cheaper price much sooner.

CNet has heard it from a source that Google would carry out a consumer launch of Google Glass by the end of 2013. The original timeline was early-mid 2014 so this is even better than we expected. The device will apparently come to us for less than $1,500, though price has yet to be pinpointed just yet. We?re just keeping our fingers crossed that it won?t be in the range of thousands of dollars.

Other information gleaned from the source suggests Google Glass will be able to interface with both Android devices and iPhone devices, and will do so via Bluetooth. The device won?t have its own cellular radios so it?ll leverage the WiFi connection or cellular data from whichever phone or tablet it?s connected to. This makes a lot of sense, and to be quite honest we never expected Google Glass to be made with the idea that it could be used 100% independent of other devices.

In other news, The Verge?s Joshua Topolsky has had a go with the smart glasses for himself. As far as we know, this is the first user account of Google Glass out there, and it gives us a good idea of what to expect from a consumer standpoint before they officially hit store shelves.

Topolsky discusses design, potential, and his thoughts on whether or not Google Glass has what it takes to be the next big innovation in computing ? long story short, he says it?s a matter of ?when,? not ?if.? Find that delicious story here, and let us know if you?re going to be in line for a pair of these if they do, in fact, drop by the end of this year.
