Sprint?s 4G LTE network is now live in parts of New York City, San Francisco and Washington D.C.
The carrier?s 4G LTE network is also live in other sections of New York state and a few cities in Florida, including Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa. None of these markets are fully covered by Sprint?s new 4G LTE network, however. There are sections of each city and market that doesn?t have 4G LTE coverage from Sprint, which is why the carrier hasn?t made an official announcement yet.
Sprint users with phones that can access 4G LTE, such as the iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy S3, can use the network without worry. As time passes more cell sites will go online, adding more Sprint 4G LTE coverage to each market. For now coverage is likely spotty in those markets.
Sprint will make official announcements in each city when it has enough cell sites to cover each one.
Last month Sprint added 58 new markets to its 4G LTE network. That coverage update included a number of cities in Texas as well as Boston, Fort Wayne, Ind. and Gettysburg, Pa.
As Sprint continues to expand its 4G LTE network, it isattempting to purchase Clearwire to help grow the network. The carrier also recently purchased a number of markets and spectrum licenses from U.S. Cellular in order to speed up its 4G LTE rollout.
The carrier is also in the process of a buyout from Japanese carrier Softbank. The acquisition will give Sprint access to more funding to rollout and improve its network.
Sprint still has a long way to go before it can catch up to AT&T and Verizon?s 4G LTE networks. Verizon expects to complete its 4G LTE network by the middle of this year. AT&T expects to complete its faster network sometime in 2014. Verizon has the largest 4G LTE network in the U.S., though AT&T is trying to catch up.
T-Mobile?s 4G LTE rollout is also in its early stages, and the carrier?s aggressive plans mean it could cover almost as much area as Sprint by the end of 2013.
