Motorola Prepping GSM Variant of Droid Bionic for Rival Carrier AT&T?

While the Droid Bionic is slated to arrive sometime this summer as the flagship 4G LTE Android smartphone for Verizon Wireless, its manufacturer Motorola may also be preparing to launch a variant of the smartphone on rival carrier AT&T.

The phone would slot in on AT&T?s lineup as a more advanced model of the Motorola Atrix 4G, though IntoMobile, which is reporting on the story, is still uncertain whether the AT&T variant will retain 4G LTE when it lands or if it will be another 4G HSPA+ smartphone, joining Android peers like the Atrix 4G, the Samsung Infuse 4G, and the HTC Inspire 4G.

A leaked shot of AT&T?s computer system shows various versions of the MOTO BLUR version number and was obtained by IntoMobile. The blog says that the last few digits of the model number are key in revealing the potential Droid Bionic variant for AT&T. The three BLUR software versions that end in MB860 are all for the Motorola Atrix 4G. However, the MB865 version is said to be arriving for the Droid Bionic variant with a dual-core processor, 4.3-inch qHD display, and front- and rear-facing cameras.

Also, while Verizon adds the XT designation for Motorola phones?the Droid Bionic is given the model number XT865?MB has traditionally been used by AT&T to identify Motorola devices. As such, an MB865 as given by the MOTO BLUR software model may be an identical variant of the XT865.

Right now all this is just conjecture and speculation, but the potential is there for a Droid Bionic to also be launched for AT&T. AT&T will also be building out its 4G LTE network later this year and Motorola may very well be working on a Droid Bionic variant with 4G LTE network support for AT&T as well.
