Road Inc. for the iPad is a Car Lovers Dream App

If you love cars, the Road Inc. iPad app may be the best $10 you spend on the iPad app store.

I spent the past few days drooling over beautiful images of the Ford Mustang GT390, the Bugatti Veron 16.4, Ferrari 250 GTO and many more cars in the recently announced iPad app.

Road Inc. (iTunes Link) is like one of those massive coffee table tomes that contains a massive amount ofinformationabout great cars throughout history.Exceptit is only $10, it fits on your iPad and it is much more than static images.

In addition to profile images, the Road Inc. app delivers a 360 degree showrooom spinning view that has great lighting effects, history of the cars, more photos and vintage promotional material than you knew existed and videos of the great cars. Even better, you can hear the engines of many cars rumble and growl to life.

It?s hard to describe all the great features that are included with much justice, so I?ll let you check out the promotional video below which does a good job of summing them up. Road Inc. claims to have spent over a million dollars putting this app together using the same software that brought Lord fo the Rings and Avatar to the big screen.

Right now, there are a 50 cars included in the app from the Ford T up to the Porsche 917K. The only downside I?ve found so far is that you have to download each car, and some like the Willy?s Overland Jeep MB is still locked. You won?t need to spend money on an in app purchase to get access, a representative tells me that the locks will go away as the servers are able to handle more downloads. The downloads move pretty fast, but there is no background downloading, so queue some favorites up while you dig into the first set few cars.

My personal favorites are the showroom that lets you view the car from all angles and the included promotional photos and magazine ads and articles that are part of the Exhibition section. If you like history, you?ll enjoy these visual treats as well as the Essay that tells the story of the car.

The app includes access to the following features and media

  • 3D images of featured cars
  • More than 15 hours of video footage
  • More than 500 high definition studio photographs from acclaimed photographers Michel Zumbrunn, Clay Simon and Michael Forman
  • 3,000 Archival documents including factory spec sheets, original brochures and advertisements, yearbooks, press article and more
  • More than 150 engine sound tracks
  • 50 original musical compositions
  • More than 200 pages of in-depth synopses regarding the cars.

I?musuallyhard pressed to recommend apps in the $10 price range, but even at $9.99 Road Inc. is well worth it. I can?t wait for the rest of my cars to download so I can share the awesome visuals with my dad this holiday season. As an avid Jeep lover, I hope we see another classic Jeep make the list, but no matter which motors get yourenginerunning, you will enjoy Road Inc.
