Netflix Announces It?s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to Start Streaming in UK and Ireland Tomorrow

It hasn?t been very long since Netflix launched in the UK and Ireland and already Netflix is adding new content. Netflix has announced that starting tomorrow the US comedy series called ?It?s Always Sunny in Philadelphia? will be available to streaming subscribers in the UK and Ireland.

Netflix

The addition of this cult-hit show brings even more content to subscribers in Europe. On February 1, back episodes of the series will be available to view. Episodes from season seven of the series will begin to air on February 13.

I really like how Netflix continues to add more content even though it has little competition in most areas. Netflix is also set this year to produce some original TV programs that will only be available streaming subscribers.

Humble Bundle brings its pay-what-you-want indie games to Android

Humble Bundle has just launched its latest pack of indie games with a twist. For the first time ever, Android is among the supported operating systems (others include Windows, Max OS X, and Linux). Up for grabs are EDGE, Osmos, and Anomaly: War for Earth. If you are unfamiliar with the Humble Indie Bundle concept, every few weeks a new pack of games becomes available for a limited time. These games are available on a pay-as-you-will basis. You name the price, you own the games. You can download them as many times as you want on as many operating systems. Even more unique is the ability to choose how much of your money goes where. You can split the payment between Humble, the game developers, and charity. There is no punishment for paying too low, but paying over the average unlocks a bonus game, World of Goo. What started as an experiment in game distribution for small developers has become a platform for independent studios to showcase their finest works.

You can head over to the Humble Bundle site and plop down what you can to own the selection of great games. While some games easily outshine others, as a purchaser of several bundles in the past I can assure you any money you fork over will be well spent. And remember, don?t wait too long to purchase because the pack of excellent games will only be available for the next 14 days.

Leatherman Skeletool Review

The Leatherman Skeletoolhas been on my ?wish list? for some time now (especially the carbon-fiber handledCX version), so when I saw them at a local Target over Christmas on clearance for 1/2 price, I finally snagged one!

Leatherman Skeletool (top), shown with a Leatherman Juice S2 for comparison. Closed position.

This is considered a small or pocket multi-tool since it is only 4? long and weighs 5oz. More importantly, it does not have the long list of tools we generally drool over ? limiting itself to a very nice pair of modified needle-nosed pliers (with the typical wire cutting and stripping section), a main blade (1/2 serrated), and a bit holder with two included double-tipped bits.Besides the main tools, it also offers a carabiner loop, can opener, and a removable pocket clip.

Open position.

This is a strikingly attractive tool, at least in my eyes. The skeletal frame is defined by gentle curving lines and many holes. A triangular hole in the blade allows it to be opened single-handedly. The pocket clip curves to match the frame, and even the back of the blade has a gentle humped curve that makes it pleasing to the eye.

The tool fits well in your hand. I like just holding it. The blade and screwdriver are not perfectly placed as they would be in dedicated tools, but they work well here. The curves of the frame seem to fit my hand almost perfectly and offer a very solid-feeling grip. When using it as a pliers, there is a ?right? and ?wrong? way to hold it due to the curves. Hold it the right way and you can almost feel the power flow into your grip. Hold it the wrong way and you?ll find yourself repositioning it almost without thinking.

Comparison of pliers jaws.

The 2? pliers head and 2.5? long blade are both strong and well-made, as is typical for Leatherman tools. The pliers head seem small if you are used to the ?full-sized? tools like the Kick or Wave but is the about same size as my beloved and well-used Juice S2 - the Skeletool?s is a bit thicker and a bit more squarely cut.

Comparison of blades.

The knife blade is half-serrated and has an odd but attractive overall shape. A large cut-out makes it easy to open with one hand while the slight hump and a wide spine on the back of the blade make it comfortable to use even for heavy cutting jobs. The blade is secured by an interframe lock helpfully stamped with a padlock icon.

Comparison of Philips bits

The bit is an odd and ?new to me? element. I need a lot of tools in my work day, including several Allen or hex tips, and a tool that lets me carry some conveniently would be a huge boon. The Skeletool features not only a locking bit holder, but it can store a spare bit in the frame! It comes with two double-ended bits- a #1 and #2 Phillips, and a small and medium slotted.

The proprietary bits (sorry for the photo quality).

The thing is ? the bits are not ?off the shelf? things you can find in the store. The bits are greatly flattened and very proprietary. The good news is that you can get a selection of bits,a modified holster, and even a handy extension bitfor pretty reasonable costs. The optional extension is cool sinceit holds theproprietarybits as well as standard bits!

One really slick bit of engineering is that as you close the tool, the bit fits neatly inside the frame around the carabiner. Speaking of the carabiner, I rarely find myself using it. Clipping it to a belt loop makes for an awkward carry since the tool is too short to ?tuck? into a pocket that way and it sort of pokes out a bit for me. I prefer using the spring clip in a back pocket? until I noticed that the protruding head was catching on things like my car seat. This is not really a design flaw, but it bothers me enough that I stopped carrying it for now (I will re-evaluate when I get the case, which I still have not ordered.)

My ?wish list? for the Skeletool is pretty short. I wish it had a detent that held the tool so you could use the bit at right angles for more power, and I wish it could carry bits and the extender more easily without the case, perhaps some sort of ?snap-on bandoleer?-like device. I also wish there was a version with scissors ? I use the scissors on my Juice S2 quite a bit ? although I would not want to give up the light weight and small size of the Skeletool for them.

Overall, this is a solidly-built smaller multitool that feels great in your hand or pocket. It has not quitereplaced my Juice S2- but it well might if/when I order the extension bit, bit kit, and case.

Linux and Windows 95/98/XP on the HTC EVO 3D? It?s more likely than you think

We?ve seen Windows 95 running the on the Motorola Droid, but how about putting the golden child of 90s computing onto something a bit more powerful? Something like the HTC EVO 3D. Thanks to an APK made available by mnomaanwof XDA Forums, we now can. But it doesn?t stop there. Also bootable with minimal hassle are Windows 98 and XP as well as Linux. The specific method does require a bit of technical know-how, but full instructions are available on at the originating thread. You can get all the files you need there, as well. Booting into an alternative operating system will lose you a bit of phone functionality (and makes less sense in an age where smartphones can accomplish most of the same tasks). So which classic OS is it for you?

Apple Patent Reveals Innovative Use Of Magnets To Secure Your iOS Device

A new Apple patent application has been uncovered by the Patently Apple website, which uses programmable magnets to lock and unlock iOS devices. The innovative patent which reveals some great concepts for using the programmable magnets was first filed back in July 2011.

Within the patent application Apple uses the example of a stylus which has been equipped with specially programmed magnets and can lock and unlock your iOS device simply by coming close to it.

However the patent application goes much deeper than just securing your iOS devices and provides a glimpse into what Apple may or may not have in store for users in the future. The Patently Apple website explains:

?Apple?s invention of enhanced security via magnetic structures could go far beyond traditional computing devices. While Apple covers many possible future applications for their invention, one of the most detailed pertains to advancing physical keys. Apple notes that a correlated magnetic lock may be more difficult to pick or open in an unauthorized fashion, as the tumblers/maxels/physical elements may not be directly manipulable.?

But don?t expect the new technology to appear within the next few iOS devices. For a full run down of the whole patent jump over to the Patently Apple website or the United States Patent Application website for the complete patent

Aesthetician?s Skin Rejuvenator

by Edwin - on January 28th, 2012

Everyone wants to be young ? just take a look at all of the beauty products that claim that they can shave off years from one?s face, not to mention the wonders of modern plastic surgery. Well, here is something from Hammacher that might just interest you ? the $399.95 Aesthetician?s Skin Rejuvenator. Relying on the same kind of therapy light that is used by aestheticians in order to diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and enlarged pores, this is the stuff that NASA dabbles with, so it had better work! Sporting two dozen LEDs which emit four pulsating wavelengths of infrared light in order to stimulate the production of collagen and cell growth, what you get in theory would be smoother, younger-looking skin.

Anyone willing to fork out the kind of money in order to try out the effects? It is said that the kind of light therapy used facilitates blood circulation, which in turn increases elastin cell production, reducing blemishes and having you end up with softer skin.

Apptopia Is A New Brokerage Website To Help Developers Sell Ownership Of Their Apps

There?s no question that mobile apps are a booming business and a new website called Apptopia wants to help developers captilize on this by selling their apps. And we?re not talking about selling an app to users ? we?re talking about selling complete ownership of an app, handing over the reigns to a big company or business.

?Apps are not just products that you buy for $0.99; they are complete businesses with revenues, customers, technology, and partners. A mobile app is an asset.?

Prospective buyers would then, after purchasing an app, get full access to the user?s code to do with the app as they pleased. They could build upon the app or simply market it the app in ways the developer never could. Think of Apptopia as a broker or middle man who will find a buyer, and do all the negotiating while the developer kicks his/her feet up. While the site still isn?t completely ready for primetime, developers interested in selling an app can sign up for more information when the site launches in February.

The Smartphone ECG- You Knew it was Coming

by Julie - on January 27th, 2012

Okay, so it used to be that smartphone healthcare applications were simply novelty items that were fun to play around with but served no place in mainstream medicine, but didn?t we suspect that someday yourphone or tablet might actually help physicians to save lives and reduce the cost of care?

Welcome Everist Genomics, a relatively new, but fast growing medical technologies company, that has just successfully integrated smartphone and tablet computer technology with truly innovative and finally, medicallyvaluable diagnostics in the areas of cardiovascular disease, metabolic diseases, (like diabetes) and even cancer. So meet Everist Genomics? CardioDefender. The CardioDefenderis the world?s first FDA-approved smartphone ECG (electrocardiogram)system that can actually provide physicians and patients with hospital-quality heart rhythm monitoringall done OUTSIDE of the hospital setting.

The brand new CardioDefender utilizes many unique capabilities that let doctors diagnose and treat potentially life-threatening heart arrhythmias that might otherwise be missed. CardioDefender is the first system to deliver mobile, real-time, beat-by-beat, and quantitative heart monitoring and automated reporting, by combining patented analytical smartphone software withits newWi-Fi device and electrodes. ?Honey, will you get the door? I?m having a cardiogram right now.?

The Defender works by utilizing asensor bracelet that pretty much looks like a digital watch, the sensor thencollects data and shoots it over to your smartphone, which analyzes it then stores it. If you in fact you do have a problem, you will receive an instant alert, but luckily, the data can also be sent to straight to your doctor. Which of course I would require, since the minute my smartphone told me I was having some kind of heart episode, I wouldcertainly follow it up with a heart attack.

CardioDefender has already been deployed at more than 150 medical facilities in the United States for post-approval commercial evaluation and will be made available to physicians all over the world this year.

Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook Challenge Gallery Kickoff Live Blog

The Dell XPS 13 is Dell?s first Ultrabook, and they arecelebratingthe launch of this small wonder with a kick off event in San Francisco.

We are on hand at the Carte Blanche Gallery in the Mission District to see what real users think of the thin and light XPS 13 Ultrabook. The event is hosted by Dell and Intel, and will includephotographyspeakers including French photographer Gwen Lafage.

The Dell XPS 13 is a 13 inch notebook, but you wouldn?t guess that by looking at the Ultrabook. By combining an edge-to-edge display and a small bezel Dell was able to cut down the size of the XPS 13 to that of the MacBook Air 11-inch model, despite boasting a larger display. The XPS 13 is also lightweight, weighing in at 2.99 pounds.

The Dell XPS 13 starts at $999 and will be available in February.

Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook

The Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook has an edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass display

The 13.3 inch display has a 1366768 resolution, which isfairlycommon for the size. To prevent scratches, the display uses edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass.

Inside, you?ll find an Intel Core i 2nd Generation processor, up to the 1.70GHz Core i7 model, 4GB RAM and the option for a 128GB or 256GB SSD. The notebook has a built in 6-cell battery which is rated at 8 hours and 53 minutes of use, even with the standard drop in claimed battery life it should get your through most of the day.

Rounding out the machine is Waves MaxxAudio 4, which boosts the sound, even on thin machines like this. Users will also enjoy the standard backlit keyboard and healthy collection of ports including USB 3.0 for fast external hard drive connectivity.

Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook Closed

The Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook has a thin form factor and a small footprint for a 13 inch notebook.

While the notebook uses integrated graphics, Dell is aiming this machine at creators, like the photographers who will be in attendance at the Gallery Event. This highly portable machine makes it possible to quickly look at your work on a larger display while out in the field, withouttakingup significant space or weighing down a gear bag.

You won?t have to worry about taking this notebook out and about thanks to a complimentary year of Dell Accidental Damage Service and a year subscription to Lojack Theft Recovery Service that can track down a stolen laptop and delete your private data.

?

Stay tuned for more details as the event gets underway around 6:30 Pacific.

Droid RAZR MAXX Crushes Competition in 4G LTE Battery Life Test

Yesterday, Verizon launched the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX which is essentially a Motorola Droid RAZR with a massive 3,300 mAh battery on board. Needless to say, it?s an intriguing phone because of the poor battery life that Verizon?s 4G LTE smartphones get. But just how much better is it? Well, LaptopMag went ahead and answered that question for us today and the answer is clear: The Droid RAZR MAXX destroys the competition in the battery life department.

The smartphone was pitted against a number of other Verizon 4G LTE smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the LG Spectrum, the original Droid RAZR, the Samsung Droid Charge, and the HTC Rezound.

All of them failed to live up to the Droid RAZR MAXX?s precedent which was 8 hours and 25 minutes of continuous web surfing over 4G LTE with the device?s display set to 40 percent brightness.

The phone with the previous best, the Samsung Droid Charge, was bested by a full hour and 43 minutes.

Droid RAZR MAXX

Coming in last place, and don?t act surprised, is the Samsung Galaxy Nexus which was only able to hold a charge of three hours and fourty minutes. Our problems with the Galaxy Nexus? battery life are well documented.

It?s not just Verizon?s lineup that got shown up by the Droid RAZR MAXX either.

Devices on AT&T and T-Mobile were left cowering in its wake as well.

We currently have our hands on the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX and while we?ve offered up our first impressions and an unboxing, we?re going to be getting our full review of it up in the near future.

Stay tuned.

Samsung Still Reviewing Launch Date for Galaxy S III

During yesterday?s earnings call, Samsung executive Younghee Lee revealed that the company is still reviewing possible launch dates for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III. She would not get into specifics as far as a date was concerned but at the very least, her statement is pretty much the first official confirmation of the Galaxy S III?s existence. Like we had any doubts.

By now, you?ve probably heard the back and forth in regards to the launch of the Galaxy S III. But if not, here?s how it has gone down.

Two days ago, a report surfaced claiming a whole bunch of things. One of those things was that the Galaxy S III would be launching in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Just a day after that information came to light, we got the potential bad news.

Samsung Still Reviewing Launch Date for Galaxy S III

At left, Sprint's Galaxy S II.

According to several other reports, Samsung has now decided against launching the Galaxy S III at MWC. Why? Well, it?s possible that it didn?t want a repeat of the Galaxy S II?s launch. That launch saw just about every country in the world get the Galaxy S II before the United States, a key market for Samsung.

That being said, it would appear that Sammy doesn?t want to have the same staggered release with the Galaxy S III.

And that statement from Lee seems to shake everything up even further. Is MWC still a possibility? It very well could be if Samsung is still weighing its options. That unfortunately is not the safe bet.

The safe bet is that Samsung will hold off on announcing it, debut its next-generation Android tablet and maybe a couple of other smaller things, and call it a day.

In addition to the release rumor, the Galaxy S III is supposedly going to be a quad-core device with an HD screen and Android 4.0 on board.

Easy to see why people want to see it debut next month.
