Focus Designs have been developing their self-balancing unicycle for some time and are now ready to released a new Version 2.0 which is ready for market and is available to purchase for around $1500.
Focus Designs has used seven sensors, gyros and accelerometers to monitor the orientation of the unicycle. Which is then decoded via a processor, by a number of custom algorithms. This data is then feed down to the hub-mounted motor which then either speeds up or slows down to maintain axial forwards/backwards balance. Watch the video after the jump to see the mechanics in their full glory.
The self-balancing unicycle is equipped with a 1000 watt motor and driven by an advanced lithium-iron nano-phosphate battery that provides a top speed of 10 mph (16 km/h) for a range of 12 miles (20 km). When flat the 38.4V 4.4Ah LiFePO4 battery on the unicycle can recharge in around 2 hours. The unicycle weighs just 13 kg so can easily be moved and handled on to vehicles and public transport if needed.
