Bracketron Universal USB Power Dock Pro Flex Review

by Dave Rees on May 31, 20121 comment

in Car Gear, Reviews, Travel Gear

When I drive, my iPhone is typically rattling around a cup holder or the center armrest between the front seats, neither of which is ideal. I cannot tell you the number of times it has fallen over or crashed to the floor of my vehicle. It is definitely not the ideal way to treat your expensive smartphone. Without a doubt, there are MANY smartphone car holders currently available but few have a built-in USB charging port that powers/charges and securely holds your device while going down the road. The folks at Bracketron Inc. have developed a well madeUniversal USB Power Dock Pro Flex smartphone holder that is held in place and is powered via the 12V power plug of your car.

Contents:

The Bracketron Universal USB Power Dock Pro Flex includes the universal holder/mount, 12V/USB/flexible arm assembly, and microUSB cable.

Features:

  • Universal holder with flexible neck design features 360 rotation and smart grip feet for optimal mounting and viewing angles while providing full access to all controls and ports.
  • PowerGrip arms securely hold the mount in your 12V port
  • High output (5V, 1.5A) USB port
  • Durable, molded high impact plastic construction with soft touch finish
  • Works with any USB cable provided with your handheld device
  • MicroUSB to USB cable included

The stiff yet flexible arm does a surprisingly good job of holding my iPhone in place. Although, it does move around a little on bumpy, unpaved roads but less than I had expected. Along with being able to tilt and pan, the ball and socket allows for 360 degree rotation of your device.

The holder itself is constructed of a hard, rigid plastic that is coated with a thin, soft rubber so that it does not mar your smartphone. As you would expect from a ?universal? smartphone cradle, it is adjustable. I tried it with several phones, the largest being an Android RAZR. From my iPhone to the RAZR, all fit just fine.

The PowerGrip arm securely holds the mount in your 12V port. The plug has rubber fins that create a bit of additional pressure to firmly hold the entire mount in place.

The universal holder is held in place/to the flex arm by a ball in socket mechanism?.very much like your hip. The ball pops into the socket and then the circular clamp screws down on the both, locking the ensemble in place. Once you position the flex arm, it does a very good job staying where you left it.

The USB plug has a blue LED indicator light that tells you when the port has power.

The only (minor) negative comment I have is that the soft rubber coating on the adjustable smartphone holder came with a production flaw. You can see here where the rubber coating is not covering the hard plastic underneath.

Other than this relatively minor issue, the Bracketron Universal USB Power Dock Pro Flex is a good way to securely hold your smartphone in your car (or for that matter, boat as well). It does a more than adequate job of holding your device in place and charging it to boot. The MSRP is $35 but can be found for less on the Net. If you are in need of something to keep your smartphone from rattling around your vehicle, you definitely should consider the Power Dock Pro Flex.

Product Information

Price: $34.95
Manufacturer: Bracketron Inc.
Requirements:
Pros:
  • - Universal mount works with a majority of smartphones
  • - Adjustable/flexible arm stays in place well
  • - USB power port works well
Cons:
  • - Came with a minor flaw in soft rubber coating

Quip is a New iPad Twitter App That Focuses on Conversations

Tomorrow iPad users will have a new Twitter app that makes it easier to keep track of conversations that happen on the social network.

Quip is the latest app from Glasshouse Apps, the developer behind The Early Edition, Gift Plan, and Barista. The new app works like most Twitter apps, letting users view their stream and post tweets, but it has a few extra features like an easier way to view conversations and an option to just view photos.

The conversation view of Quip means users no longer have to search through other people?s Twitter profiles to see full conversations. The app has a separate view option for conversations, breaking them out of the stream for easy viewing. Just tapping the tweet that started the conversation will reveal the rest of the conversation. If a tweet isn?t marked as a conversation, tapping and holding on the user?s avatar will link it to responses and conversations.

From the preview video we can also see the app has a separate view option for photos. The option seems to group together photos taken by users, making it easy to view all photos by the individual Twitter user. The option shows the photos in fullscreen with the tweets and replies to the tweets below them.

Quip will be available in the App Store tomorrow, May 31, though we don?t know the price. It does have some limitations such as the lack of Lists support and no auto-updating, but it still looks like a great Twitter app. It doesn?t seem quite as powerful as Tweetbot from the description, but it looks like a great app for users who don?t need all the features of Tweetbot. Or, for users who still want Tweetbot, it seems like a great way to casually view photos and a better way to view full conversations.

Samsung Series 5 Chromebook laptop and desktop announced

by Edwin - on May 30th, 2012

South Korean conglomerate Samsung has just announced the availability of the Series 5 Chromebook laptop and desktop, coming in the form of the Series 5 Chromebook and Series 3 Chromebox that will carry Samsung?s signature renowned, sleek design identity. Tipping the scales at slightly more than three pounds, and measuring under an inch thin, the Series 5 Chromebook can be toted around in a jiffy. Not only that, the full-sized keyboard is said to be able to help one achieve maximum convenience and productivity, as it carries a 12.1-inch, SuperBright LCD display that is perfect for all of your portable computing needs, ranging from viewing photos and work documents to holding a conversation face-to-face thanks to the integrated webcam.

As for the Samsung Series 3 Chromebox, this is a compact as well as highly powerful home or office computer, paving the way for the Chrome operating system to function in a desktop environment. Measuring 7.6 x 7.6 x 1.3-inches, this computer is tiny enough to occupy minimal space on your desk, in a bookshelf or perhaps even have it lay next to the couch, making it ideal to tote around wherever you are. Design-wise, it is simple, sporting a sleek matte black finish as well as silver accents.

As for the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook, this little wonder is able to boot up in just seven seconds, letting you increase your productivity levels by a tiny margin. After all, compare that to having your current notebook to fully boot up in a couple of minutes, just how much more work can you get done with that time? Hardware wise, you get an Intel Celeron 867 Dual Core 1.3GHz processor, where it will be accompanied by a 16GB SSD as well as 4GB RAM, which should be sufficient enough to deliver the relevant computing power to get your work done. Of course, since it runs on Chrome, you need an Internet connection to fully utilize it, and the built-in 3G wireless feature (optional) from Verizon Wireless helps you be connected anytime, anywhere. Verizon will deliver up to 100MBs of Mobile Broadband service monthly, where it will keep the device company for a couple of years.

Integrated cloud storage will let the Chromebook and Chromebox access one?s files securely from just about anywhere, while synchronization technology helps you back up all of your preferences, bookmarks and apps, letting you experience a more or less uniform setting regardless of whether you are working from a Chrome browser elsewhere or on another device. There is also Google Cloud Print thrown into the mix for easy web printing to any Samsung Google Cloud Print ready laser printer.

Expect the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook and the Samsung Series 3 Chromebox to arrive from today onwards, with the Series 5 Chromebook Wi-Fi model retailing for $449.99 while the 3G model will be more expensive at $549.99. As for the Series 3 Chromebox Wi-Fi model, it goes for $329.99.

Samsung Galaxy S III coming to Canada on June 20

The Samsung Galaxy S III will soon make its North American debut as Canadian carrier Videotron has confirmed a once rumored June 20th release date. The revelation of a release date follows the debut of a countdown on Bell?s site that may be ticking off the seconds until the carrier is accepting pre-orders. Samsung Chromebook Series 5 Launches with New Chrome OS

Samsung has a new Chromebook model to go along with Google?s new version of Chrome OS, but it?s still a bit expensive for what it does.

The new Samsung Chromebook Series 5 is a laptop with a 12.1-inch display, an Intel Celeron 867 Dual Core (1.3 GHz) CPU, 16GB SSD, and 4GB of RAM. The specs should make the Series 5 Chromebook run Chrome OS smoothly, but even with the new update the OS can?t do as much as a tablet or cheap Windows 7 laptop.

The new Chrome OS eschews the original idea of opening directly into the Chrome web browser, and instead gives the user a Windows 7-esque desktop experience. Despite the desktop, however, Chrome OS is still focused around the Chrome web browser. Apps still load as pages in the browser, which means users can onlyuse the apps in the Chrome Web Store.

The new UI certainly seems more user-friendly with Aero Snap-like abilities and multiple windows on the screen at once. The new Chrome OS should also run faster than previous iterations, even on the relatively anemic Celeron processor (compared to CPUs in other mobile devices).

Where the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 falls flat before we even touch one is the price. The WiFi only model of the Series 5 Chromebook sells for $449, and the 3G model sells for $549. The 3G model offers 100MB of free 3G data per month. The WiFi model sells for $50 less than the base model of the new iPad, which can do more than Chrome OS. There are also Windows 7 laptops available for less, that can do more.

Chromebooks seem like a great idea, but it?d be a much easier decision to buy one if they cost half as much as they currently do.

Folding Electric Bicycle

by Edwin - on May 29th, 2012

Want to get around in a green way? You can either ride on a bicycle, or get the job done using an electric bicycle. Of course, the latter will result in some sort of carbon emission somewhere (indirectly speaking, since the electricity required to charge it needs to come from somewhere, don?t you think so?), but at least it will help you tackle those steep mountains without missing a beat. Not only that, the name Folding Electric Bicycle does give the game away, where this $2,000 electric bicycle will be able to fold in half, making it perfect for commutes and storage at work or an apartment.

It will be folded around its integrated battery compartment, where its front half collapses against its rear half, whereas its front unifork will fold into the frame, resulting in a compact 30? x 18? x 12? shape. It can be deployed for riding in an instant, thanks to its silent 250-watt electric motor which will help you go uphill without breaking a sweat, or you can power across broad flats for smooth cruising on its 20? tires at a top speed of up to 15 mph in full-power mode.

The removable 24-volt rechargeable lithium battery comes with a 15-mile range, taking half a dozen hours to charge up. It is made out of aircraft aluminum frame, and can support riders of up to 250 lbs.

Facebook to Build Smartphone to Compete Against Google?

Rumors are once again surfacing that social network giant Facebook will be taking on its Internet adversary Google in the hardware space by creating its own branded smartphone. This hasn?t been the first time that Facebook is rumored to be entering the smartphone space, and the company has declared that mobile is an important platform for it moving forward. According to a report on the New York Times, the software company has recently poached and recruited hardware engineers from rivals, such as Apple, so that it can fulfill its goal of building its own phone.

Facebook?s entry into the smartphone space somewhat mirrors that of Apple. The company currently has its largest presence on a mobile device on the AT&T HTC Status in the U.S., which is an Android smartphone that has a dedicated Facebook hardware key to make it easy to share with your social network. When Apple explored building a smartphone prior to the debut of the iPhone, it too had tested the waters with an experienced phone-maker with Motorola to debut an iTunes-centric phone. Then, as we know it, Apple released its own hardware in 2007 and the rest is history. If Facebook does release its own hardware after its partnership with HTC on the Status for AT&T, the company will likely have to do more than just integrate with its own network to be successful and a Facebook phone is expected to blow things out of the water.

Sources to the Timessaid that the company had already made aggressive hires: ?The company has already hired more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on theiPhone, and one who worked on theiPad, the employees and those briefed on the plans said.?

It?s not clear how Facebook hopes to tackle its own phone and if it will create its own proprietary ecosystem. Facebook is already rolling out an apps store, and it already has credit cards on files for little Facebook e-gifts that users can send to each other. One route, though, would be to take on Google like what Amazon did when it launched the Kindle Fire tablet. For Amazon, Android was just the baseline. The company added its own skin and proprietary UI and experiences on top of Android so the end product looked nothing like an Android slate. The tablet taps into Amazon?s digital storefronts and bypassed Google, and Amazon was able to leverage the fact that it makes a commission for content sold?such as books, music, movies, magazines, and apps?so it was able to price the tablet at a loss to attract market share. Facebook, too, can potentially take a similar approach and add its own app store on top of its Facebook UI if it doesn?t want to create its own OS from scratch.

Other possibilities that are being thrown out right now include buying an established phone-maker that?s struggling, like Research in Motion or HTC, and adding to what?s out there. Still, there are other open-source OSes that Facebook can use, including Intel?s and Samsung?s Tizen and HP?s webOS.

According to the report, this will be Facebook?s third attempt at creating a phone. The first effort failed as Facebook did not anticipate the process to be that difficult. The second effort resulted in the rumored speculation that Facebook and HTC are collaborating on a project called Buffy, which the Timessaid is still in the works.

One engineer who formerly worked at Apple and worked on the iPhone said he had met with Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook?s chief executive, who then peppered him with questions about the inner workings of smartphones. It did not sound like idle intellectual curiosity, the engineer said; Mr. Zuckerberg asked about intricate details, including the types of chips used, he said. Another former Apple hardware engineer was recruited by a Facebook executive and was told about the company?s hardware explorations.

With a fresh IPO, analysts are saying Facebook needs a way to show that it can monetize itself and drive revenue in a tangible way, and mobile would be one outlet. As Facebook also makes money on advertising, this would help drive Facebook?s advertising reach as well. Just prior to the launch of the company?s IPO, advertiser and car-maker GM pulled its ads on Facebook citing that it did not see the results it was expecting.

Facebook so far has not denied nor confirmed these rumors. The company told All Things Dlast year when asked,?We?re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers.?

An earlier survey showed that respondents did not necessarily want a Facebook phone so Facebook will have to be innovative on how it approaches the mobile market to convince consumers.

Grad Gift Guide: 5 iPhone Accessories for Graduates

With graduation just around the corner for most high school students, relatives and friends are most likely searching for graduation gifts.

Here is a list of some popular and useful accessories for the iPhone that are a sure hit for soon to be college students.

These accessories are perfect for students with an iPhone 4S or iPhone 4, which covers most students who own an iPhone. All of these accessories except the case will also work with older iPhones, like the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch, so if in doubt check out our other recommendations.

We even have you covered with a gift you can give on the way to the graduation party!

Zagg Sparq

A portable battery to keep your devices charged up all the time.

The Zagg Sparq is a portable battery that can charge almost any smartphone or tablet. It includes two USB ports for your gadgets to charge from. There is an optimized port that is specifically made for iPhones so that it charges your phone at the same rate as a wall charger from the 0-60%.

The Zagg Sparq can fully recharge an iPhone four times and it also adds about 5-6additionalhours of video watching to the iPad. This is a perfect accessory for the college student who is up late studying who may of forgot their wall charger back in the dorm.

$47 @ Amazon

Headphones

Keep the beats pumping while the brainwaves are working.

With all of that studying I?m sure that a new pair of headphones could definitely be of use. With some over ear headphones being expensive you can get a decent pair of earbuds for around $100.

If you wish to go with a Bluetooth pair, thePlantronics BackBeat Go headphones are a nice pair. Since they are bluetooth no wires are required which is always a nice especially for working out. Check them out on amazon here:

$99 @ Amazon

A good pair of wired headphones with an inline microphone and controls are the V-Moda Remix In Ear Headphones. These earbuds feature Noise Isolation, volume controls and a mic, as well as being offered in four different colors.

$40 @ Amazon

Element iPhone case

Show off your iPhone in style and also have a layer of protection.

Even if you don?t use a case on a regular basis it is always nice to have one or another case that you can switch to for different occasions. One of my favorite cases comes from Element. The Element Formula 4 case is a nice case that has a good blend of usefulness and also design.

Read: Top iPhone 4S cases

With a removable bottom section the Formula 4 allows easy dock connection, a lightweight feel, but also strength with the carbon fiber backplate.

$50 @ Amazon

Screen Protector

Keep your iPhone grime free and protected.

Using a screen protector on your iPhone may seem unnecessary but it is very beneficial to keep scratches and oil off of your screen. Screen protectors range in price and some are hit or miss especially the off brand ones. I have gone through two screen protectors with my iPhone and from my experience Zagg Invisible Shield screen protectors are the best. With a lifetime warranty against scratches, militarygrade film, and advanced clarity films, Zagg is definitely the best.

$25 @ Amazon

iTunes giftcard

Who can say no to money that you can spend on apps, music and books.

Besides physical accessories for your iPhone an iTunes giftcard is just as useful. Soon to be poor college students will not have the money to spend on music and games so your grad will very much appreciate this gift. Also graduates can buy books in the iBookstore with an iTunes giftcard in addition tospending their money on movies and games.

iTunes giftcards are priced at $15, $25, $50, and $100 online and in most stores. You can find these in many gas stations and online.

?

Hopefully these five items will help choosing a graduation gift a little less of a headache. What are some of your favorite iPhone accessories? Share them in the comments below.

Get your camping kits ready, Londoners. First 50 Galaxy S III owners to be given tickets to the Olympics

As if they aren?t fortunate enough to be the first ones to get their hands on the Samsung Galaxy S III, Londoners now have another reason to buy the phone as soon as the stores open: tickets to this summer?s Olympics. Just to be clear, you have to have pre-ordered the device, as these customers have been invited pick up their phones before regular customers are allowed to.

Considering the mess that was the ticket lottery system, this might actually be the easier way to watch one of the events at the Games (though which one hasn?t been specified). Samsung is clearly going on overdrive to promote their phone along with the Olympics, having earlier released a special edition of the Galaxy Note and an advertisement of the phablet that featured David Beckham (who is still heavily tipped to be part of Great Britain?s football/soccer team).
