Could Metro PCS be getting acquired by T-Mobile, Sprint or DISH Network?

Reports of a sudden collection of meetings between Metro PCS and three companies have brought speculation of a possible acquisition or merger in the works. It is said that the regional carrier could be trying to settle a deal with T-Mobile, Sprint (which we have heard of before) or even DISH Network; but what would this mean for us?

Is it even likely to happen? We have seen AT&T unsuccessfully trying to purchase T-Mobile, so how could a deal like this one ever go through? Well, there is a significant difference in any of these possible scenarios. These companies are not nearly as large as AT&T was (one of them is not even a phone carrier), and T-Mobile is significantly larger than Metro PCS.

If T-Mobile or Sprint manage to snatch Metro PCS up, the market would continue to be competitive as the 4 largest carriers would still exist. But of course, as Android fans we would hate to see any form of option going away. Metro PCS is still pretty large with about 10 million subscribers. Not to mention the company has been catering the affordable Android market like a boss.

The company is also not very behind in technology, offering 4G LTE and a good selection of devices. It would be a shame if one of the few alternatives to the big four disappears. You would be right to assume that no company is giving any comments or statements yet, but we would like to know how our readers feel about this.

Would you feel the same as most of us did during the AT&T/T-Mobile merger deal? Would you be more open to a possible acquisition from one of the 2 smaller carriers (T-Mobile and Sprint)? Hey, it just might give one of the companies the boost it needs to improve competition.

Mini Modded Nintendo 64

Mini Modded Nintendo 64

The N64 is one of the most beloved Nintendo consoles ever, but like most consoles of the era, it was large. Too large for one determined modder. So he cut it down to size.

He put the old N64 into a far more compact and slim case. This mini N64 is the work of a modder named Slipstream and he manages to get all of the design cues spot on. It looks like it was hit by a shrinking ray.

It?s called the Nintendo 64 Mini, and is about the same size as the controller itself. Sadly it is not for sale at the moment. I would buy it in an instant. That is some great modding work my friend.

Outdoor Technology Turtle Shell Wireless Boombox Review

The Turtle Shell from Outdoor Technology is a rugged water resistant wireless boombox that has been designed for indoors, outdoors and everywhere in between. This portable Bluetooth speaker is currently seeking funding via Kickstarter, but with only 10 days to go, they are already over their goal and will be shipping units next month. They sent me one of their production speakers for a quick review. Let?s take a look (and listen).

Note: Images can be clicked to view a larger size.

Package Contents

Turtle Shell Wireless Boombox
Drawstring Pouch
USB cable and AC adapter
3.5mm patch cord
Instructions

Technical Info

Range of up to 33 feet from device
Pairs with any Bluetooth device
Bluetooth A2DP V2.1
Volume/Track/Call control
Standard Threading on base
3.5mm jack for plug-in functionality
Built in mic for call functionality

Hardware Specs

IPX-5 Dust & Weatherproof Standard
Rechargeable Lithium-ion battery
9-10 hours of hi-fi sound or talk time

The oval shape and angular surfaces make this speaker resemble a turtle shell. Which of course is where the name comes from. Available in an assortment of colors, the shell itself has a rubberized coating that can be easily cleaned if you drop it in a mud puddle or spill your morning cup of coffee on it. It?s water resistant, which means you can rinse it off in the sink and / or use it outdoors in the rain.

The small size of the Turtle Shell isn?t quite pocket friendly ? unless you have large cargo pockets. It won?t take up that much room in your gear bag though.

Extending the water, dirt and dust resistant features, the controls for the speaker are molded into the shell covering. There are 3 buttons that control music play back and call answering, as well as Bluetooth pairing. The two outer buttons control volume and when held down will also move forwards and backwards through your tunes. The center button allows you to play, pause, answer and end calls.

On one end you?ll find a rubber flap which protects a proprietary USB charging connector and the 3.5mm headphone jack. I am not sure why a micro USB connector wasn?t used for this product. As is, you?ll have to make sure not to lose the cable that is included with this device or you?ll not be able to charge the internal lithium ion batteries.

On the opposite side you?ll find the On / Off switch, which also has a status LED built into it. The LED will glow Red while charging and will blink Blue while powered on.

The bottom of the speaker has a metal loop which can be used with a carabiner to attach the speaker to a bag or something else. The Turtle Shell speaker also features a standard tripod mount sized threaded socket. With this socket, you can attach the Turtle Shell to all kinds of mounts like Joby Gorilla Pod tripods.

You can also use Outdoor Technology?s own Turtle Claw accessory (optional purchase of $19.95). It provides an adjustable handle bar type clamp which can be used to mount the speaker on bicycles, strollers, or anything else you can think of.

I tested the Turtle Shell with my Samsung Galaxy S 3 paired via Bluetooth. Pairing was easy and did not require me to type in a 4 digit code, which was nice. Once paired, I was able to stream music from the phone to the speaker. Sound quality is very good. Much better than I had anticipated. I was very surprised with the bass response for such a small speaker. It really thumps! Even with the volume turned up, the audio quality is clear and doesn?t distort. This speaker will easily fill a small to medium sized room with sound.

The best thing about Bluetooth is that it?s wireless. I left my phone in the basement and carried the Turtle Shell upstairs to the kitchen while I prepared dinner. The streaming from the phone didn?t cut out even once. It even alerted me when a call came in to my phone. I clicked the center button to answer the call and used the built in speaker phone feature. The person on the other end knew I was on a speaker phone, but it was just convenient to answer that way. After I hung up, the streaming music resumed.

By the way, if you don?t have a Bluetooth device, you can also attach an audio player using the 3.5mm input jack. Connect the included patch cable between the speaker and your device and you?re all set.

The Turtle Shell Wireless Boombox is a rugged little wireless speaker that is easy to use, looks great and should stand up to almost any abuse that you can dish out. If you want one, I suggest you go to theirKickstarterproject in the next 10 days so that you can get one for the $99 price. Once they start selling normally, the price is going to go up to $149.95.

Pros:
  • Great sound and bass
  • Wireless

Antenna problems causing delay of Droid RAZR HD, RAZR MAXX HD?

There might be a hitch in Verizon?s plans to release the Motorola Droid RAZR HD and Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD. According to a rumor originating atHoward Forums, antenna issues could have forced Moto and VZW to delay the handset. According to the report, the antenna design of the two devices puts it in contact with the edges of the phone?s casing, creating a situation not unlike that of the iPhone 4?s ?death grip.?

Given that the problem pertains to actual hardware design, the fix likely isn?t as easy as a software patch, and thus could create a lengthy delay. Rumors have positioned the phones as launching towards the end of October, but if the antenna problems are real, it is more likely that we won?t see the new RAZRs until after Thanksgiving at the earliest.

Full Phrase Talking Translator

by Edwin - on September 27th, 2012

Don?t you think that language is a wonderful thing? I personally think so, and have a great admiration for people who seem to have the knack of picking up languages just like that, and they can rattle off fluently in a room full of different nationalities, speaking to them in their own heart language without nary a mistake. For lesser mortals like me, there is always an electronic device out there which could help me out in a potentially tight spot, especially when I am in an unfamiliar country or territory. Enter the $249.95 Full Phrase Talking Translator, where this model will translate and articulate full phrases and words typed on its keyboard instead of just concentrating on individual words.

The Full Phrase Talking Translator is able to instantly display translations to and from English for 210,000 common travel phrases, or rather, 1.8 million words in 24 European languages, three Asian languages, English, Arabic, or Hindi. The dictionary that powers this translator would be the New Oxford American Dictionary, and it is smart enough to maintain a history of searched terms so that you can create a favorites list for commonly used phrases. It won?t take up too much space in your luggage when you travel either, as it roughly measures the size of a smartphone. Just make sure you carry a pair of AAA batteries to have it function as spares on your travels.

American Greetings says hello to the Ultimate Mustache Party

by Edwin - on September 27th, 2012

Do you think that with the advent of the Internet, greeting cards have become obsolete? I know that the telegram has gone the way of the dodo in most, if not all countries as a mode of communication, and the snail mail (postal service) sector is not doing too hot either. This could be because of the speed and accuracy of emails, but when it comes to greeting cards, I am not quite sure whether the electronic revolution has seen electronic greeting cards make huge strides and inroads to render its paper-based predecessor obsolete. American Greetings has come up with a one-of-a-kind greeting card collection, and they will accompany that with a free app for big birthday smiles.

Actually, one of the best things of a traditional greeting card would be the recipient?s facial expression when he or she receives it, especially when we are talking about a birthday card here. Pleasant words aside, just what are some of the more hilarious birthday cards that you have seen in the past? American Greetings thinks that the mustache madness might just continue in the world of greeting cards, hence rolling out Mustache Party, a new greeting card collection that should be set to be the top hit of any birthday bash. In a nutshell, Mustache Party provides consumers with the ultimate birthday treatment, where one has a delectable selection of paper cards and ecards with an exciting free app.

This frisky new card line will boast of iconic mustaches which would seem ready at all times to serenade the recipient with a truly unique song. Each mustache will be presented in a shiny frame, where it springs to life with the touch of a button. The amalgamation of a clever copy, catchy songs, and mustache-powered motion would mean the Mustache Party is a wacky and wonderful way to carve a smile on the birthday boy or girl?s face. Some of the fun designs in this collection include a pirate, a manly mustache, and even a magical mustache.

Iain Sinclair CardSharp 2 Credit Card Utility Knife Review

Whether you consider the CardSharp 2 Utility Knife from Iain Sinclaira worthy pocket tool or just a novelty, you do have to admit that it?s one of the most unusual knife designs to come along in a very long time. Maybe the most unique ever. Let?s take a closer look.

Note: Images can be clicked to view a larger size.

The CardSharp has the same footprint as a typical plastic credit card. Make that 3 credit cards stacked on top of each other.

The one piececase / handle of the CardSharpis madeof a light weight flexible polymer called Polypropylene and the knife blade is madeof surgical stainless steel. The design is pretty clever. The blade is protected(as are your fingers) by the surrounding plastic case and thebevel on the blade itself. No matter how you rub your fingers across the blade area, you won?t becut while it?s in this folded state. To turn it into a knife, you have to do a bit of origami. First you have to open the lock, which is the ridgedbutton in the lower corner shown above. When you can see the Green stripe, you know the CardSharp is safe to put in your wallet. You can open the lock by pinching the button between your thumb and index finger and rotating it until the blade is free.

Then you pivot the Blade up and the sides fold around it to create the handle. You?re probably thinking that after many times of folding and unfolding, that the plastic hingewill eventually break. According to Iain Sinclair, they are living hinges that are guaranteed for life.

5 plastic studs on one side of the handle, snap into the other side to keep the handle securely formed.

The result is a 5.5 inch long knife (from blade tip to handle end). The blade itself is about 2.25 inch long.

You?ll notice that the blade has my name laser engraved on it. This is an option fromIain Sinclair that can beadded when you order the knife, for an additional $8.

The handle has been designedfor safety, with a finger guard and a thumb grip. Even though the CardSharp is thin, it is surprisingly comfortable to hold and use. It doesn?t feel awkward at all. It feels as natural to hold as traditional knife.

Is the CardSharpsharp? You betcha! It?s razor sharpand has been designed to stay that way by keeping the blade edgeprotected from rubbing against anything while it?s in the folded / stored state. I used it to cut through somecardboard boxes, slice through packing tape and cut string. It performed well on all these tasks.

Is the CardSharpa worthy pocket (wallet) knife or are there better alternatives. I think you probably already knowmy answer to that question. Although the CardSharp2 is sharp and compact, it suffers from one main flaw that prevents it from being an indispensableeveryday tool. That?s the fact thatyou have toput it together before you can use it. You can?t just take it out of your wallet and start cutting right away. You have to unlock the blade, unfold it and snap the handle together. That?s too many steps for a useful tool in my opinion. That said, the CardSharp is definitely clever and a perfectaddition to any avid knife collector?s collection.
