Lenovo formally announced the IdeaPad Yoga 13 today in New York, a convertible WIndows 8 tablet with a dual hinge that rotates 360-degrees transforming the Yoga 13 from a tablet to a notebook. We first saw pre-production versions of the Yoga 13 back in January at CES 2012, but Lenovo didn?t have firm pricing or release information until today.
Lenovo is updating the IdeaPad line to mesh with the Windows 8 consumer release on October 26th.Lenovo?s first Windows 8 convertible notebook will cost $1,099 and up depending on configuration. The starting price might sound steep, but its multiple modes may convince users to pay for a little more for an all-in-one experience.
The IdeaPad Yoga 13?s defining feature is its dual-hinge design. This allows users to place the screen in almost any position. While competing tablets rely on kickstands, holders and keyboard docks, the IdeaPad Yoga bends and folds without any extra contraptions.Users can fold the Yoga 13 display all the way back, so the back of the display meats the back of the keyboard. This allows users to hold the Yoga 13 like a traditional slate tablet.
When the keyboard is needed, users can flip the display up like a traditional laptop. The dual hinge design means users can find a better angle than on most laptops.
For gaming or watching movies, user can fold the display around, putting the display front and center, using thekeyboardto keep the tablet steady. The tablet can also bend into tent mode for when table space is limited.
When the tablet is rotated out of laptop mode the keys on the keyboard deactivate. Lenovo will offer a sleeve to cover the keys, providinga smoother surface to hold while in tablet mode.
The 13.3 inch display sports a 1600 x 900 resolution and supports 10-point multitouch, which means users can use apps that require all ten fingers, such as piano apps and multiplayer games.
Lenovo includes Intel Core i ULV processors, up to a Core i7, so consumers should be able to use the Yoga 13 as their primary computer. The Yoga 13 is configurable with up to 256GB of storage and up to 8GB of RAM. The Yoga 13 uses an INtel 4000 HD graphics chip and includes a front facing 720P HD webcam.
The IdeaPad Yoga 13 is one of the first Windows 8 convertible tablet and Ultrabooks announced. The Yoga 13 will go on sale at Lenovo later this month for a starting price of $1,099. Lenovo also introduced the IdeaPad Yoga 11, which runs Windows 8 RT and utilizes NVIDIA Tegra 3 technology.
