China has banned video game consoles from being sold in the country since 2000. Chinese lawmaker said the ban was to safeguard the mental and physical development of children hundred. However, Chinese citizens have been able to play video games online using computers or on mobile devices for very long time.
Reports have come in from a Chinese newspaper called China Daily claiming that an official from the Ministry of Culture has said that the policy banning video game consoles is under review. However, an official at the Ministry?s cultural market department responsible for the game ban legislation has denied the report.
This official has stated that ministry is not considering lifting the ban. Considering the huge Chinese market for gaming, shares in Sony, the maker of the PS3, gained 8% overnight while Nintendo gained 3.5%.
