Samsung Galaxy S III: What to Expect

We just caught wind of a rumor that states that the next iPhone, presumably called the iPhone 5, won?t be out until either September or October of this year. If true, it would mean that there will be a huge gap to fill this summer in terms of smartphone releases. And one company in particular might try to capitalize on that void. That company of course is Samsung, maker of the Galaxy S series of smartphones.

Last year, Apple and Samsung went head to head in smartphone sales and while Apple ultimately won out, Samsung was biting on its heels. A lot of the success can be attributed to the release of the Samsung Galaxy S II, a phone that is widely considered to be the best Android phone ever made.

With the releases of the Galaxy S II and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in December, the company has surpassed both HTC and Motorola as the premier Android manufacturer and now it has its sights on a bigger prize.

And it likely plans to do take them on with the Galaxy S III.

Originally, we thought that the Galaxy S III would be arriving at this month?s Mobile World Congress but Samsung has confirmed that that won?t be the case. Instead, the company will announce the device at a separate event during the first half of 2012.

So, as you?d might imagine, there is a lot of excitement about this device and what it will offer. While details are fairly scarce, we can make some educated guesses and paint a picture of a device that Samsung hopes will bring it the same type of success that the Galaxy S II and 2011 brought along with them.

Let?s have a look at what you?re going to want to expect from the Galaxy S III.

Quad-Core Processor

We fully expect to see the first quad-core smartphones announced at this month?s MWC. Samsung is going to want to keep pace with its top-of-the-line smartphone which means we fully expect to see the Galaxy S III powered by a quad-core processor.

In fact, we?ve already heard rumors of a quad-core processor being on board the Galaxy S III.

Will it be Samsung?s rumored 2GHz Exynos processor that?s on board when it arrives?

We?d have to imagine that is a distinct possibility considering the company is rumored to be announcing at least one tablet with a quad-core processor on board at MWC 2012.

Android 4.0

In December, Google announced and launched Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. And while not many phones have received the update just yet, Android manufacturers are hard at work on getting their devices updated. And by summer, there should be quite a few Android 4.0 phones on the market.

The Samsung Galaxy S III will definitely be one of them.

There?s no way that Samsung would release its flagship phone without the flagship Android operating system.

Large Display

Samsung had a lot of success with the large displays found on its Galaxy S II line and with the Galaxy Nexus and we expect the same thing from the Galaxy S III. Just how big will the displays be?

If we had to guess, we?d say that Samsung won?t stray too far from what it did last year.

Here is how the screen sizes broke down:

• AT&T Galaxy S II ? 4.3 inches
• Sprint Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch ? 4.52 inches
• T-Mobile Galaxy S II ? 4.52 inches
• Samsung Galaxy Nexus ? 4.65 inches

So, expect a display on the Samsung Galaxy S III that sits somewhere between 4.3-inches and 4.65-inches.

Thin Design

According to a recent rumor, the Galaxy S III will feature a design that is a mere 7mm thick. If true, it would be thinner then the Motorola Droid RAZR which features a 7.1mm design.

This is completely within the realm of possibility and while 7mm might not end up being the exact measurement of the Galaxy S III?s design, we think it?s safe to expect an extremely thin design.

Multiple Carriers

Last year?s Samsung Galaxy S II launched on three major carriers here in the United States ? AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Verizon?s version of the Galaxy S II ended up coming months later in the form of a 4G LTE enabled Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

And there is no reason to believe that Samsung won?t be doing something similar with the Galaxy S III.

We haven?t heard anything specific yet but we?d imagine that at the very least we?ll see the phone land on AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Verizon? Well, seeing as though it has the Nexus, if it does end up getting the Galaxy S III, we wouldn?t expect to see it until later on this year because of the close proximity to the Galaxy Nexus launch.

However, the past has shown that Verizon has no problem trumping recent releases, see Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX, and it?s certainly possible that Big Red might have a Galaxy S III up its sleeve earlier than expected.

4G LTE

It?s almost a given that Samsung will include a 4G LTE radio inside the Galaxy S III. AT&T has been expanding its network. Sprint will have its network in place by summer. And Verizon already has its network in nearly 200 markets around the U.S.

T-Mobile also offers quick data speeds on its HSPA+ 42 network.

The Samsung Galaxy S III has been rumored to be a 4G LTE device and that shouldn?t surprise anyone. 4G LTE is the future while 3G is very quickly becoming a thing of the past.

Summer Release

Lastly. There has been a lot of talk about the Galaxy S III release date. Will it be in the spring? Will it be during the summer? If we had to guess, we?d expect Samsung to launch the Galaxy S III during the summer, tying in it with a huge marketing push during the Summer Olympic Games in London.

Samsung has said that it will likely be tying in a major product launch with the Olympics and the Galaxy S III is a likely candidate.

Throw in the fact that iPhone 4 owners will be coming off contract, presumably without an iPhone 5 to buy, and you can see why Samsung will probably try and make this summer all about the Galaxy S III.
