Verizon Wireless will turn on LTE in Tuscaloosa on April 19th

Yes, that is correct, Verizon Wireless announced today via press release that they will flip the LTE switch in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on April 19th, 2012. In addition to Tuscaloosa, they will hit Auburn, putting LTE in both of Alabama?s football cities. The fact that I will finally get Verizon LTE isn?t the big news here. The news is that with the markets turned up onApril 19th, Verizon Wireless? 4G LTE Network will be available to more than 2/3 of the U.S. population.

Verizon is reporting that they will introduce its 4G LTE network into 27 new markets this Thursday as well as expanding 44 other markets. Verizon estimates that it will have LTE deployed in 400 markets, covering over 260 million people by the end of 2012.

The following markets will get LTE on April 19th:

Auburn and Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Pine Bluff, Siloam Springs and Van Buren, Ark.; Visalia/Porterville, Calif.; Fort Walton Beach and Ocala, Fla.; Brunswick, LaGrange and Macon/Warner Robins, Ga.; Peoria, Ill.; Kokomo/Logansport and Marion, Ind.; Dodge City, Garden City, Great Bend and Hays, Kan.; Salisbury, Md.; Cattaraugus/Allegany, N.Y.; Sandusky, Ohio; Ardmore and Ponca City, Okla.; Salem/Albany/Corvallis, Ore.; Pierre, S.D.; and Big Springs and Tyler, Texas.

While AT&T and T-Mobile were crowned as the fastest 4G and 3G networks respectively by PC World, Verizon seems to be on the ball with deployment of LTE.

I am happy to have LTE available soon, but I still don?t think we need it. 3G speeds are plenty for 95% of us. If you have unlimited data still and stream a bunch of video, LTE is great, but if you are checking email, hitting the social media sites, and doing a little surfing, 3G is plenty in my opinion. Sure, we?re geeks and the faster the better. I get that. I am the same way, but at the same time, I know I don?t really need 4G.

Either way, Kudos Verizon for getting LTE out there quickly. Roll Tide!
