Outages: Is Verizon 4G Starting to Look Like BlackBerry

Verizon?s 4G LTE network is awesome when it works, yielding fast uploads and even faster download speeds. However, since the network launched, there have been periods of small intermittent outages at night and a few instances of longer outages that last for hours. Whatever the cause(s) of these outages, Verizon Wireless has in the past refrained from giving away information except to say that it is aware of network issues and that engineers are hard at work trying to remedy the situation. Given the reliance on mobile networks these days and the somewhat tired reporting of outages on LTE on Verizon, is the carrier?s connectivity problem ringing like a sore bell from the BlackBerry camp where BlackBerry outages have sometimes cripple mobile warriors in the past from accessing the Internet?

Tonight?s outage on Verizon?s network, at least in the San Francisco, California Bay Area, seemingly affects some devices but not others. It?s unclear why certain devices are affected and why others are not affected, but the outage appears to be widespread.

While 4G LTE is still young, and Verizon still has an excuse as it is building out and optimizing its network, the outages are starting to become more of an annoyance. For a carrier that promotes itself as America?s most reliable network, down time is more unacceptable now than ever as more people are relying on their smartphones and tablets as Internet hubs, rather than peripherals, to getting online and getting things done. These outages are starting to mirror BlackBerry server outages, and Verizon?s secrecy over the causes are worrisome. Though, somewhat of a saving grace, often times when 4G LTE is down, users can selectively turn off 4G LTE and connect to 3G instead to gain data access.
