America?s navy has an amazing fleet, with giant, powerful ships. The problem is that they are confined to the water. DARPA?s new CAAT demonstrator can be a great addition to the military since it can travel on water or land.
The CAAT, which stands for Captive Air Amphibious Transporter, is part of a DARPA?s Tactically Expandable Maritime Platform program. The program aims to use ?innovative technologies to transform commercial container ships into self-contained floating supply bases during disaster relief operations, without needing port infrastructure.?
If we think of it as a tank, the tank treads are made of soft floppy bits that are filled with air. This is what allows it to float on water and also crawl over all kinds of obstacles. The Office of Naval Research will determine if the Navy or the Marines are going to try the CAAT out for themselves.
